Cleethorpes is a town in North East Lincolnshire, England, situated at the mouth of the River Humber.
In the 19th century Cleethorpes was a fishing village but after the construction of the railway between the industrial towns of Yorkshire and the coast it grew rapidly.
Cleethorpes was constituted a Local Board of Health District in 1873, and under the Local Government Act of 1894 it became an urban district.

Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway is a 15" (0.38 m) railway built in 1948 in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire.
A Lottery grant enabled the railway to acquire stock from a site in the Midlands, while there are plans to develop the line in the direction of Pleasure Island.

Between Cleethorpes leisure centre (Kingsway station) and Pleasure Island theme park (Lakeside) through the boating lake park and the backs of the sand dunes along the Humber estuary.
Being a half sized replica of a narrow gauge original she sits somewhere between the miniature locos and the true 15" narrow gauge locomotives that are currently built.
The CCLR is home to the Sutton collection of miniature railway stock as well as the base for the replica of Sir Arthur Heywoods' "Effie".

This half size replica of S.R. #24 was purchased in 1997 with the intention of operating her on the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway in Lincolnshire.
I was impressed, however, the loco had been built to operate on a two mile long railway with pretty light grades yet here she was pulling heavy trains on a nine mile line with a steady up gradient from one end to the other and certain stretches of 1:76.
At Cleethorpes, we had been in need of a further steam loco to join the rosta for some time, and when it became known that #24 was up for sale it was an opertunity not to be missed thus, the 'Sandy River No. 24 Company Limited' came into being and the deal was done.

On a sunny morning, my wife and I drove to Stevenage to have a day out at the seaside and to visit the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway for the first time.
We then transferred to a pair of Stagecoach double-deckers and were taken to the Lakeside terminus of the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway.
When we got there, the train waiting to go to the other end of the line at Kingsway was full, so instead we got in a 2 car DMU that was running shuttles to the engine shed and back.

This is an excellent little railway run by an enthusiastic band of men and women.

Sunday 17 August saw the West Coast Main Line through Stafford closed from about 12:30 to 17:30 because of damage to the overhead wires: it was reported that large numbers of passengers were stranded at Crewe with no idea of what was happening....
After 40 years of storage, the entire collection has been given a new lease of life on the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, where the rolling stock and buildings have been allowed to retain their former identities.
When this railway closed, following the owner's sudden death in 1947, it was sold for reuse at Sutton Coldfield, where it was repainted, initially in brown because a showmens' superstition considered green to be an unlucky colour.

The former Sutton Miniature Railway locos were due to be running on the railway, so a trip to Cleethorpes seemed a good idea.
A 4 hour stay gave us time for a ride on the railway, plus a chance to photograph the locos in action.
I must have a look through my books and learn a bit more about the history of the SMR, then update this page with a few more details at a later date.
