Its author, Clellan Card, was born in Minneapolis on June 24, 1903, the son of Dr. William H. Card, a local dentist.
Clellan walked into the WCCO Radio studios with his father one day and was soon doing a bit part as Izaak Walton in a fishing tackle commercial.
In September of 1952, Card's oldest son, Peter, was killed when his Air Force training plane crashed and burned at San Angelo, Texas.

Clellan Card (June 24, 1903–April 13, 1966) was a noted on-air personality at the Minnesota station WCCO best-known for the dozen years where he played Axel Torgeson on the local children's show Axel and His Dog.
Card was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and spent most of his life in the Twin Cities region, although he attended Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
In the 1960s, Card began to suffer from the effects of cancer, though few people outside of WCCO knew of his condition.

The Alex Torgerson character, a loony "Scandihoovian," was created by Card in the late 1930s when he had a popular morning radio show on WCCO AM called Almanac of the Air.

If you grew up around a television set in the Twin Cities during the late fifties than you remember "Axel and His Dog" the most famous kids show in the history of local television.
Few people knew that Clellan Card had Cancer.
It was one of the saddest moments in the history of Twin Cities television on April 14th, 1966 when a co-star of the show told viewers Axel would not be returning to do the show: Card had died the day before of cancer.
