Clemens Krauss -- Biography of a Vienese Conductor
Clemens Krauss was born March 31, 1893 in Vienna.
Before the end of the war, Krauss returned to Vienna where he conducted the last concert of the Philharmonic before the Russians entered the city and, three weeks later, the first concert after the liberation of Austria.
Whoever was fortunate enough to hear Krauss in his last years as a conductor of the classical symphonies truly realized that each year brought with it more maturity.

 Clemens Krauss
Krauss himself performs as a model for his work, in which various human gestures are acted out.
The impasto paint with its organic, fleshy character creates volume and mass that allows the figures to emerge from the canvas and reinforces their material substance, though not in the sense of a fully plastic physicality that alludes to an external reality, in the way that occidental art has been attempting in painting for centuries.
In this way Krauss is able to draw attention to the process of creating an image and reveals the human body to be the result of a formal setting and a quality of the painting medium itself.

Krauss was offered leadership of the Vienna State Opera, accepted it, but at the last moment Karl B–hm was selected because a rich industrialist friend of his threatened to withdraw financial support for the VSO unless B–hm was given the job.
Krauss ignores Strauss's markings for the opening three trumpet statements in Zarathustra; they are to be consecutively louder—but then most other conductors do too including the composer in his 1942 VPO recording available on Music and Arts 10572.

Clemens Krauss also played a major role during this period in the orchestra's musical life, leading it in concerts even during the darkest days of the war.
Krauss also established the tradition of the orchestra's New Year's concerts, now seen internationally on television every year--in the middle of World War II, as a statement of Austrian identity as distinct from that of Germany, he led a performance of waltzes by Johann Strauss that became an annual tradition.
Following the death of Clemens Krauss in 1954, the New Years Concerts were taken over by Willi Boskovsky, the orchestra's concertmaster, who also made numerous recordings as their conductor in a wide variety of repertory.

Krauss himself - and here is the rub - sounds only intermittently on fire - he was coming to the end of a summer’s work which had included his Bayreuth début in both the Ring and Parsifal.
Preiser has released a Krauss 1942 Bavarian broadcast with his wife, Viorica Ursuleac (who appears in Guild’s 1936 78 excerpts which are splendid, though there are splices from other performances to ensure continuity) and Georgine von Milinkovic et al.
This is relative though; Krauss is still a formidable guide, not as rhythmically incisive as Szell but with a greater sense of rubato and stage design — and I think, in the end, definably more of a sense of the humanity of the score.

In Salzburg on August 11, 1929, Clemens Krauss, the conductor who remains to this day the foremost apologist of Strauss' music, initiated the Vienna Philharmonic's Strauss tradition when he conducted a concert made up exclusively of works of Johann Strauss, Jr.
He was not able to witness the quantum leap which the concerts made through the introduction of televised broadcasts, but his well documented interpretations of the works of the Strauss dynasty remain to this day the standard by which his successors are measured.
The unexpected passing of Clemens Krauss in 1954 caused a great dilemma for the orchestra in determining his successor.

Vienna born conductor Clemens Krauss (1893-1954) has been a favorite artist of mine since I owned a 78 rpm set entitled Three Delightful Waltzes, wherein the music of Johann Strauss was divided between Krauss and another immense talent, Erich Kleiber.
Having led the world premiers of four of Richard Strauss operas, Krauss enjoyed the uneasy reputation of type-casting as a Strauss specialist, even while his surveys of Wagner, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Schubert, and Haydn tended to be overlooked.
Collectors are well aware that Krauss inscribed Death and Transfiguration with the VPO for Decca as part of a large Strauss cycle for records.

This event, with the simple title of "Special Concert", was conducted by Clemens Krauss on Dec. 31, 1939, with an open dress rehearsal on Dec. 30th, which added another paradox to Austrian cultural history - the fact that the New Year's Concert actually had its beginning on New Year's Eve instead of New Year's Day.

Johann Strauss's second most popular opera in its first full recording, in a pirate edition of a performance originally released by Decca/London, done in the early 1950s by Clemens Krauss and the Vienna Philharmonic.
The sound is mono but very closely recorded, with vivid textures, and Alfred Poell and Julius Patzak are superb as the count and Barinkay, respectively.
Conductor Clemens Krauss built much of his reputation around his work with Richard Strauss, but as this recording and his Fledermaus attest, he was equally inspired with the other Strauss, despite a slow-paced opening chorus here.

It is incredible that Preiser didn't fill out the second CD, which has a playing time of less than twenty minutes, with some other Johann Strauss recordings, as Decca did—the latter offered nine waltzes, polkas and marches by the Strauss family, all in studio recordings with Krauss and the VPO recorded in September 1951.
Preiser gives a three-page history of the operetta and track listings plus a fine photograph of the entire cast with Krauss at the time of the recording.
A year later, the success of Fledermaus prompted Decca to record the same composer's The Gypsy Baron with another all Viennese cast, Clemens Krauss, the Vienna State Opera Chorus and the Vienna Philharmonic.
