Clemens Alexander Winkler (1838-1904) was born in Freiburg in Germany.
Winkler, who had a considerable reputation was asked by the Freiberg Academy of Mining to examine it.
Winkler’s discovery completed the detection of the three new elements predicted by Mendeleev nearly 20 years earlier.

In February of 1886, Winkler was sure of the discovery of this new element.
Winkler intended to name element Neptunium, bearing in mind that the history of its discovery was similar to the history of the discovery of the planet Neptune.
Just as the existence of the new element was predicted, the existence of the planet was predicted in 1845 by the mathematicians John Couch Adams and Urbain Leverrier for the fact that Uranus was being pulled slightly out of position in its orbit.

Germanium - Chapter 1: Historical Sketch - from Element to Organic Compound   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Germanium as an element was identified in 1886 by a German chemist Clemens Winkler.
Winkler isolated this element during an analysis of the ore argyrodite, a silver mineral, from the Himmelsfurst mine, St. Michaelis near Freiburg in Saxony and named it Germanium after his homeland.
Germanium belongs to family four of the periodic table, along with carbon, silicon, tin and lead, and is usually classified as a semi-metal, or said to have semiconductor properties.

Other sources of supply had accordingly to be sought, and they were found by going backtoa reaction known since the first quarter of the I9th century, when J. Dobereiner discovered the combination of SOi and 0 into SOi by means of spongy platinum.
Winkler showed that this division was best obtained by soaking asbestos with a solution of platinum chloride and reducing the platinum to the metallic state, and he described later a specially active kind of contact substance, prepared from platinum chloride at a low temperature.
This revival of the synthetical production of SO,, at a period when this article had suddenly become of great importance, caused the greatest excitement among chemists and led to numerous attempts in the same direction, some of whitth were at once sufficiently successful to compete with the Bohemian process.
