  HOASM: Clément Marot
Clément Marot, French poet, was born at Cahors, the capital of the province of Quercy, some time during the winter of the year 1496-1497.
It is certain that Marot, like most of Marguerite's literary court, and perhaps more than most of them, was greatly attracted by her gracious ways, her unfailing kindness, and her admirable intellectual accomplishments, but there is not the slightest ground for thinking that his attachment was other than platonic.
The victory, as far as wit was concerned, rested with Marot, but his biographers are probably not fanciful in supposing that a certain amount of odium was created against him by the squabble, and that, as in Dolet's case, his subsequent misfortunes were not altogether unconnected with a too little governed tongue and pen.

MAROT, CLÉMENT [Marot, Clément], 1496?-1544, French court poet.
Marot was imprisoned for Reformationist heresy in 1526 and based his superb allegorical satire Enfer on the experience.
Exiled from France for his Calvinist sympathies, he could not stay in Geneva for want of "proper" devotion and died in Turin alone and abandoned.

This book takes as its point of departure the translation of a poem by Clement Marot, and goes on to delve into creativity, art, and everything.
Poetic translation is the soul of this book, and Hofstadter subscribes to the school of translation believing that the medium and the message are equally important.
Le Ton Beau de Marot book was inspired by the author's attempts to translate a short poem by an obscure French Renaissance poet named Clement Marot.

The series of translations of the Marot poem are charming and varied, though only a few of them sustain anything like the tone of the original (as I dimly sense it) throughout.
This book had its genesis in Hofstadter's attempts to translate "A une Damoyselle Malade" written by the French Poet Clement Marot in 1537.
It is at times a wordy book, but, given how much there is to learn from it, well worth the pain of getting past these sections.

The challenge is to translate the poem’s semantic content as faithfully as possible within the following formal constraints:
