"CLEOBURY MORTIMER, a parish and market town in the Cleobury division of the hundred of Stottesdon, in the county of Salop, 8 miles W. of Bewdley, its post town, and 11 E. of Ludlow.
Near the church anciently stood a castle, erected by the Mortimers, which was reduced by Henry II., and there are Roman encampments in the neighbourhood.
In the vicinity are the Clee hills, which abound in limestone, coal, and iron ore, but the trade carried on is comparatively small in consequence of the difficulties in the way of transit.

At the time of the Conquest, Cleobury Mortimer was held by Queen Edith, wife of Edward the Confessor, and after the conquest it was held by Ralph de Mortimer who came with the Conqueror from Normandy and was one of the chiefs at the Battle of Hastings.

Cleobury Mortimer had a clockmaker in the 18th Century by the name of Peter Blount (1688-1765) He was my 5xggf.
My mother remembers being taken to visit a (strawberry ?) farm in Cleobury Mortimer as a child - it was owned by a family named Whatmore, and she had the impression that they were Baxter relatives.
I was born in Cleobury in 1951 and lived there until 1970, and have returned there often to visit family.

The pub is built on the Cleobury to Bewdley road and this thoroughfare was one of the primary routes between the Marches and Wales and the River Severn which was navigable at one time beyond Bewdley.
The side road to the camping and caravaning site was once the access road to Cleobury Station which was on the railway line between Woofferton junction and Kidderminster part of which is still operating under steam as the Severn Valley Railway.
Cleobury Station was very important as coal mined in the area would be transported from there for sale in other parts of the country and an overhead bucket system was used to carry coal from the Bayton coal mines to the station.

The Wall Town Roman fort is sited in a small valley about a mile to the east of the River Rea, a tributary of the Teme, some 1½ miles north-east of the crossing of the Rea at Cleobury Mortimer in Shropshire.
This remoteness in itself suggests that the original site was not long occupied before being found surplus to requirements and decommissioned, prior to the road network in the Welsh Marches becoming established (Webster fig.22 p.62; Margary fig.2 p.48).
The high platform of this site, the massive rampart, the straight sides and rounded angles, show up well from the air and are in the fashion of Roman works (pl. IX, 3).
