Movies of this title were released in 1912, 1917, 1920, 1934, 1963, and 1999.
With such astronomical cost and the current price of movie tickets, Cleopatra didn't have chance of making a profit on its first run and it took several years to break even and the financial loss from the film forced the studio to file for bankruptcy.

Cleopatra's lack of confidence due to her sexual inexperience is further compounded by Caesar's powerful presence and authority, as he "walked around [her] as though [she] were a tree, rooted and growing in his- [her]- chamber" (George, 92).
Cleopatra sits up into a mermaid position and lingeringly tucks loose strands of her tousled hair behind her ear before looking at Caesar, whose face is stretched into a ridiculously large and silly smile.
Cleopatra can be intelligent, authorative, seductive, manipulative, strong or weak, but always her sexuality is a prominent characteristic in which all artists deal with one way or the other.

One of the movie’s most famous scenes ran that risk, and could be seen by some as extravagance for the sake of flash.
When Cleopatra enters Rome, we see an enormously long and active parade of dancers, animals and other amusements prior to the arrival of the queen herself, who comes in bestride an enormous replica of the Sphinx.
The movie offered a wonderfully broad palette of hues - especially due to the variety of clothes worn by the participants - and the DVD reproduced them with excellent accuracy and vividness; colors presented some of the movie’s highlights.

In the movie, Caesar's mission in Egypt is to settle a rivalry between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy over who has right to the throne.
Cleopatra was actually 20 or 21 years old, very intelligent (with the ability to speak many languages, as Plutarch had stated), and obviously had some ingenuity.
In the play and movie, this is brought up as an issue, but yet both underplay her political motives and dramatize her use of feminine wiles (which she could have used while on the Nile with Caesar).

One wishes to say yes, but in the end, the answer is no. Cleopatra is big and majestic but manages only to collapse under it's own weight due to several shortcomings and sheer boredom, yet this film would've been better.
The first half rolls on well with Cleopatra and Julius Caesar mixing it up with politics and greed (pretty much the only piece of story you'll find), but there are several scenes that run 2-3 minutes too long.
Cleopatra's entrance to Rome is impressive but with nothing going for it, it starts to run way too long and borders at times on the pretentious side.

 IGN: Cleopatra Review
The first half of the movie is the story of their relationship, which ends tragically when the Roman senate turns on him and kills him (and if you consider that a spoiler, you really should have paid more attention in history class).
It makes for a movie filled to the brim with plot and characters, and that steams along at a steady pace, but is unafraid to take a moment to deepen a character or create atmosphere.
The movie itself has a great commentary track with Martin Landau, Fox publicist Jack Brodsky (who wrote a book about the making of the film), and the director's sons, Chris and Tom Mankiewicz (you might recognize Tom from the Superman commentary), who were onset for the whole production.

MMI Movie Review: Cleopatra's Second Husband
Written and directed by Jon Reiss, "Cleopatra's Second Husband" is a dark, psychological journey for one man who exists as a useful doormat.
Reiss claims it refers to Marc Antony's relationship with the demanding Cleopatra but it this is not about man-and-wife, this is about exploring the age-old male bully/victim paradox.
"Cleopatra's Second Husband" is a clever, dark film exploring a secret within the walls of a home and the mind of a man. What struck me initially was its swift pace; each scene seemed to last only a few minutes before moving quickly onto the next.
