  Clerke Rocks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Clerke Rocks are a group of small rocky islands 74 km southeast of South Georgia Island at 55°01′ S 34°41′ W that extend 8 km from east to west.
They include The Office Boys (Spanish: Los Mandaderos) at the northeastern end and Nobby (Spanish: Islote Llamativo or Roca Notable) at the southeastern end of the group.
The islands were discovered in 1775 by a British expedition under Capt. James Cook, who named them for Charles Clerke, an officer on the HMS Resolution who first saw the rocks.

Surgeon Patten and Lieutenant Clerke had their muskets taken and when they were recovered Cook thought it best to leave.
Clerke landed on a small island, Goat Island, to search for water but was unsuccessful.
On the 23rd they found the land to be only rocks, covered in seabirds, and Cook called them Clerke's Rocks after his officer.

The German expedition sent out to observe the transit of Venus was stationed at Royal Bay, on the south-east side of the island in 1882.
The island group consists of the main island of South Georgia (Pepys Island), some satellite islands (including Bird Island, Annekov Island, Cooper Island, Pickersgill Islands, Welcome Islands, Willis Islands), as well as the Shag Rocks, including Black Rock, 250 km to the West, and the Clerke Rocks 74 km in the Southeast.

On Cook's second voyage, when he reached and named South Georgia, he was sailing down Possession Bay when he saw a number of islands, one of which he named after Pickersgill and one after another of his officers.
Cooper's Island and Clerke's Rocks carry the names of other officers on the expedition.
Pickersgill by this time was Third Lieutenant and had other places named after him too - Pickersgill Harbour in New Zealand and Pickersgill Island at the tip of South America.

The ship had sailed east from the tip of South America, rather than the usual course of following the coast, or heading towards the Falkland Islands.
As they sailed along the northern coast of the island Cook named the places he saw after his patrons and eminent people back home, and also after some of his crew, such as Coopers Island (after the First Lieutenant), Clerke’s Rocks (after the Second Lieutenant) and Pickersgill Island (after the Third Lieutenant).
Pickersgill island is a pretty bleak place I should imagine.
