Most non-molecular and molecular studies place Clethraceae as closely associated or included in Ericales depending on the circumscription of Ericales.
The latest ordinal classification (The Angiosperm Phylogeny Group) placed Clethraceae in a broadly circumscribed, monophyletic, Ericales including families such as Actinidiaceae, Cyrillaceae and Styracaceae.

Clethraceae Clethra alnifolia L. Leaf: Alternate, simple, finely serrated margin, obovate, 2 to 3 1/2 inches long, glabrous, shiny dark green above, paler below.
Flower: Small white flowers occurring in dense clusters on long 3 to 6 inch terminal spikes, appearing in July and August.
Form: Dense shrub up to 10 feet tall, often root suckers to form thickets.

Sweet pepperbush has a wonderful fragrance, showy flowers, attracts butterflies, grows in the shade, blooms in mid summer, has nice fall color, stays small - in short, sweet pepperbush is one of the finest deciduous shrubs in cultivation.
Clethra is the only genus in the family, Clethraceae, which is very closely related to the heath family, Ericaceae.
Besides this one North American species, there are about 40 other species of Clethra which occur in eastern and southeastern Asia.

The family has a disjunct distribution with almost one third of the species in SE Asia and Malesia (23 species), the rest occurring in the Americas (47 species) and one species on the island of Madeira.
