  The MathWorks - Founders - Cleve Moler
Cleve Moler is chairman and chief scientist at The MathWorks.
Moler was a professor of math and computer science for almost 20 years at the University of Michigan, Stanford University and the University of New Mexico.
In addition to being the author of the first version of MATLAB, Moler is one of the authors of the LINPACK and EISPACK scientific subroutine libraries.

Random notes: Currently I'm using Givens rotations with the algorithm of Cleve Moler and Donald Morrison to form sqrt (x*x + y*y).
I'm aware that there are sqrt free versions, the current choice is a matter of understandability and clarity in a tutorial that goes with it, not blinding optimised speed.
