The area north of the dam surrounding Capilano Lake is closed to the public as it is a GVRD watershed.
Water treatment facilities are located adjacent to the dam, and a tunneling project scheduled for completion in 2008 will connect the reservoir to a new treatment plant at the Seymour Dam to the east.
During spawning seasons, the fish ladder is heavily used by fish in the area that use it to bypass the dam.

Here's the route that we typically do: we park at the Cleveland Dam parking lot, and view the spectacular site of the water spilling over the dam, Capilano lake, and the peaks called the Lions in the distance.
Cross the dam, and take the Capilano Pacific trail down the west side of the river in the direction of the hatchery.
I haven't even mentioned the river, dam or salmon hatchery, because those are neat too.

The potential for seepage and instability of the east abutment of the dam was recognized back in 1954, when the concrete dam was built.
The dam was closed earlier this month due to turbid water and has not reopened yet.

A prothonotary warbler was also running up and down the channel downstream from the dam both upstream and downstream from the Coventry Road bridge.
The road on the dam appears to be labeled "Brook Road" on some maps.

This is a moderate two-hour walk (each way) from the eastern part of Ambleside Park to the Cleveland Dam in the Capilano River Canyon.
The trail goes through the Capilano River Regional Park to the Fish Hatchery (watch the salmon jumping during spawning season, November to December), Cleveland Dam, and Capilano Lake.

In addition to the $20-million project to patch up Cleveland Dam, an $80-million ozonation plant is being built at the dam.
The Cleveland Dam's seepage problem is not new.
The millions being invested in patching up the dam and installing a temporary ozonation facility would be far better spent in tapping what will be the future sources of water for the Lower Mainland's growing population.
