 The Cleveland International Piano Competition : Our History
Cleveland was chosen as the site of the Competition because of the long association between George Szell and Robert Casadesus, and at the instigation of Grant Johannesen (then president of The Cleveland Institute of Music).
In response to their withdrawal, and in recognition of the growing involvement of Clevelanders with the Competition, PIANO became the sponsoring organization and the name of the Competition was changed to the Cleveland International Piano Competition.
The conductor was Jahja Ling, resident conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director of Blossom Music Center.

He was Professor of Violin at Oberlin Conservatory (1962 to 1971), Chairman of the String Department and Kulas Professor at CIM (1971 to 1981), and a member of the violin faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music (1975 to 1985; head of violin department 1981 to 1985).
Studied at State Academy of Music in Vienna with Ernst Moravec; Louis J. Bostelmann and Louis Persinger at the Juilliard School of Music; and Joseph Knitzer at The Cleveland Institute of Music.
Russell is the founder and former artistic director of the Pensacola Chamber Music Festival in Florida and served on the faculties of the Meadowmount School of Music and the New School of Music.

Franz Welser-Möst, who becomes music director of the Cleveland Orchestra next month, has agreed to work with students at the Cleveland Institute of Music and to conduct the school's orchestra occasionally, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reports.
According to the newspaper, the agreement is part of Welser-Möst's commitment to get involved in music education in the Cleveland and it extends the already close relationship between the Cleveland Orchestra and the institute.
The school's faculty includes 34 Cleveland Orchestra members and many of the orchestra's players are institute alumni.
