 Cleveland Museum of Art - Provenance Research
In response to the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) guidelines issued in June 1998, the paintings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art embarked upon a major research project to investigate in depth the provenance of paintings that might relate to Nazi-era art looting during the period 1933-1945.
Provenance research findings posted here are limited to the three hundred and seventy-three (373) works of art in our European paintings collection and the 86 in our sculpture collection that either have gaps in their provenance or that were known to have been confiscated by the Nazis during their time of power.
Accession numbers reflect the year an object was acquired by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Established in 1913, the renowned museum is well known for its collections of Pre-Columbian, medieval European, and Asian art.
The Museum's main building was constructed in 1916, and was expanded in 1958, in 1971 (designed by Marcel Breuer) and in 1983.

While Reid is a highly regarded administrator -- she's president of the Association of Art Museum Directors -- her intimate, personal knowledge of the Cleveland museum made her a particularly good choice for director, museum President Michael Horvitz says.
She was assistant director, then deputy director at the Art Institute of Chicago during an expansion there in the 1980s and then served as director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond starting in 1991.
