Given the standard coziness of gala welcoming concerts and the already warm relationship between Franz Welser-Möst and Cleveland's music community, the only real suspense about his first concert as the Cleveland Orchestra's Music Director was where in the hall the players would be seated for the Marc-André Dalbavie premiere.

By R.M. The Cleveland Orchestra came to Benaroya Hall Tuesday night and conquered the near capacity house, if one can make that judgment based on multiple standing ovations and thunderous, almost raucous, applause.
Certainly, the reception for this astonishing orchestra in 2005 was better than on its last visit, a quarter of a century ago, when the best the city could do was to trickle into the Opera House for a modest showing, filling perhaps a third of the hall.
For Seattle, which opens the orchestra's West Coast tour, the program was drawn from the standard repertory, with Ravel opening, followed by lesser-known Dvorak and very famous Bartok, concluding, as an encore, with some sublime Debussy.
