Cleveland is divided into the East Side and the West Side by the Cuyahoga River, which flows through the heart of its downtown.

 William Stinchcomb
In 1939, a Cleveland newspaper pronounced, “Bill Stinchcomb and the park system are one institution.” His genius was to anticipate the future need for open space at a time when Cuyahoga County outside of Cleveland was still largely rural.
As chief of the metropolitan parks, Stinchcomb never lost sight of the big picture, arguing that parks contributed in untold measure to the health and welfare of the community and worked unceasingly for the district’s expansion.
Indeed, between 1942 and 1944 Stinchcomb was seconded from the park district to serve as executive director of the Cuyahoga County Council for Civil Defense.

The park is due North of the juction of Interstate 71 and Interstate 76.
In my eagerness to see the park up close, I trespassed in a person's yard, and was probably technically trespassing in the park itself, even though a neighbor said it would be OK. I understand that security around the park has been increased in the past year, and I hope I didn't contribute to that.
It's sad to think that the park was certainly dying at its centennial; that may even have been its last year of operation.

Cleveland Park was once a collection of summer homes for the city's elite.
Of course, wealthy people are notorious NIMBY's, and if not for the NIMBYism of the residents of Cleveland Park, there probably would have been a freeway running up Connecticut Ave; additionally, if not for the efforts of neighborhood activists from Cleveland Park, the DC Metro system might not exist as it does today.
Hope these photos help convey why Cleveland Park is one of the most accessible, livable, attractive, and downright desirable (and quite expensive) neighborhoods in the entire Washington, DC region.

Although the new park is open, a grand opening will likely be this fall, perhaps in October.
