  USS Cleveland (CL-55) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The second USS Cleveland (CL-55) of the United States Navy was a light cruiser, the lead ship of the Cleveland class and active in both the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters of World War II.
Her first mission in the consolidation of the Solomon Islands was with TF 18 to guard a troop convoy to Guadalcanal from 27 to 31 January, Cleveland fired on the enemy as she came under heavy air attack in the battle of Rennell Island on the 29th and 30th.
Cleveland got underway from Okinawa 9 September to support the occupation of Japan by covering the evacuation of Allied prisoners of war from Wakayama, then serving as part of a naval occupation group until the 6th Army made its landings on Honshu.

In the World War II era, light cruisers had guns ranging from 5 inch (127 mm) to 6.1 inch (155 mm), the most common size being 6 inch (152 mm), while heavy cruisers usually had a battery of 8 inch (203 mm) guns.

By the summer of 1944 Cleveland was in action in the Marianas, Saipan, and she participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea with TF58.
On 1/2 November Denver was one of the cruisers involved in the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, where she received some damage from gunfire, after which she supported the landings at Cape Torokina on Bougainville.
After a period in reserve she was another of the class to be selected for conversion into a guided-missile cruiser, recommissioning as CLG 8 on 26 March 1960.

This class was well protected against torpedo and mine hits through a well sub-divided hull, which also had no openings as on the earlier cruiser classes.

The Navy responded by greatly accelerating construction of the big Essex class aircraft carriers and, in January 1942, reordering a Cleveland class light cruiser as an aircraft carrier.
Plans developed for this conversion showed much more promise than expected and two more light cruisers were reordered as carriers in February, three in March and a final three in June 1942.
The nine ships of the Independence class were all converted from Cleveland class light cruisers building at the New York Shipbuilding Coporation shipyard, Camden, New Jersey.

Her name was again struck from the Navy list on 1 April 1970, and the former light cruiser was sunk during an explosive test off San Clemente Island on 1 October 1970.

The Independence class light carriers was converted from Cleveland class light cruiser hulls, on an initiative originating with President Roosevelt.
The cruiser hull’s main deck would become the carriers strength deck, with a hangar and flight deck structure superimposed upon it.

Commissioned in November 1903 as the first of her class to be completed, she operated with the European Squadron and in U.S. and Caribbean waters during the next three and a half years.
With relations with Germany approaching a breakdown, Cleveland was transferred to the East Coast in March 1917 and soon began shipping protection patrols and convoy escort missions between the U.S. and the mid-Atlantic.
Reclassified as a gunboat (PG-33) in July 1920 and as a light cruiser (CL-21) in August 1921, Cleveland remained active off Latin America until she was decommissioned at the beginning of November 1929.

USS Biloxi, a 10,000-ton Cleveland class light cruiser built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned at the end of August 1943.
Late in the year, after a training cruise along the U.S. East Coast and in the Caribbean area and post-shakedown overhaul, the new cruiser steamed to the Pacific to join the war against Japan.
