Cley is one of the best sites for seeing rare birds in Britain because of its location and habitats.

Despite the name, Cley (pronounced "Cly") has not been "next the sea" since the 17th century, due to land reclamation.
It is hard to imagine Cley as one of the busiest ports in England, where grain, malt, fish, spices, coal, cloth, barley and oats were exported or imported.

Between Cley church and the main part of the village you'll encounter sloes, the ancestor of all of our cultivated plums and probably the tartest, most acid berry you'll ever taste (as Richard Mabey puts it "just one cautious bite will make the whole of the inside of your mouth creep …").
Wild sea kale is around too; though it's tougher and has a stronger flavour than its cultivated cousin, you can use it in the same way (just blanch it first to remove any bitterness).
If you're in Cley on an August Saturday, the summer stalls on Cley Green are always worth a look: run to raise funds for the church and other local causes, they're manned (well, okay, womanned) by local people who bring along the usual selection of jams, chutneys, cakes and things, all home made.

The River Glaven was navigableas far as Glandford and ran into the sea half a mile north west of the village.
The Duchess of Bedford, who was finally lost at sea flying her own aircraft, was one of the frequent visitors during this period.
The Mill stood firm but much of the furniture was damaged or washed away and a sea wall was built around the remainder of the village.

Cley has both salt and fresh water marshes, large areas of reedbed and grazing marsh providing a variety of habitats to encourage the local species for which Cley is famous - Bittern, Bearded Tit, Sedge, Reed and Grasshopper Warblers and a selection of passage waders such as Wigeon, Teal, Shoveler, Pintail etc. have been seen.
Cley is one of the few sites in Britain with breeding Bittern, the booming call of the male can sometimes be heard in the early morning or evening.
Cley is in close proximity to many stately homes, including Holkham Hall (only 8 miles away) - which also boasts one of the finest unspoilt beaches in England, Blickling Hall, Sandringham and Felbrigg Hall.

Cley (which rhymes with "sigh" for some reason) was once a thriving sea port, they say; now it's just a tiny village in the middle of nowhere.
I imagine there are other places on earth where you can do that, but this is the one I know firsthand.

The pity is that Cley Smokehouse no longer offer a mail order service; if you want to try their produce you will have to go Cley-next-the Sea in person.
Not that it should prove a hardship, Cley is a charming one-lane village with old clapperboard houses and a windmill - with its sails intact - facing out to sea.
The shop itself is small and dark with the actual smoking is all done in the back in a large brick smoke chimney.

In fact, it would not be much of an exaggeration to say that most people in Norfolk have a medieval church next door.
