Cliché - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many authorities feel that the appearance of cliché in writing or speech can indicate a lack of creativity, innovation, or sincerity on the part of the author/orator.
In storytelling, cliché can both establish rapport with an audience, a usage of a form of shibboleth, and simplify exposition or description.
Commonly, comedy exploits the use of cliché by using a series of literary devices in order to cause the reader or audience to expect a certain cliché, but instead delivering the punchline contrary to what was expected of the cliché (but it could be argued that this in itself has become a cliché).

 NationMaster.com - Encyclopedia: Cliche
Clich often refers to concepts or ideas that are overused despite not really reflecting reality, expressing a kind of self-reproducing prejudice.
Clich are occasionally viewed as insincere, especially when spoken sarcastically ("avoid clich s like the plague").
Extensive use of clichés is sometimes seen as an indicator of poor verbal skills and is common in colloquial language.

One further area worthy of note is that cliched speech patterns are not delivered in flat, uniform rhythms.
The syllable count is not therefore the full story insofar as the prosody of the cliched language patterns is concerned, there is timing and emphasis to be considered.

Death by cliché is insidious, suffocating your articles, stories and poems as silently and finally as a pillow in the night.
The dictionary states that a cliché is “an expression worn out by long use.” In other words, a cliché is the opposite of something fresh or exciting.
Clichés can be complex, sometimes involving the combination of a cliché expression or simile with a cliché image.

In most pad-printing applications, cliches are exposed with the emulsion side of the positive (or toner side, in the case of laser-printer positives) making contact with the cliche surface.
The photosensitive surface of the cliches come covered with a protective foil, and the entire cliche is generally packaged in a bag that protects the cliche from exposure to UV light.
The packaging and the protective foil on the cliche should not be removed until you are ready for exposure, and they should only be removed under safe-light conditions, meaning that lighting is filtered to exclude UV wavelengths.

poeticvoices.com July 1998 Guest Column: On Critique and Cliche   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The keywords in the definition of a cliche is "has lost its effectiveness." It matters not how often an expression is used or how familiar everyone is with it, if it is used properly and has not lost its total effectiveness, then it is not a cliche.
A talented poet may be quite capable of using a cliche like expression in such a way as to give an otherwise trite expression new life and render it once again effective, thus, in that instant it is not a cliche.
The danger lies in placing the label cliche on specific expressions such as "tender lips," "trembling heart," "passion," etc. Much depends on the talent and skill of the individual poet as far as cliches are concerned.

Cliche Kitty will be my co-host this evening as I define three different types of humor, all of which are fashionable among users of the Internet.
The Cliche Kitty labelling to the left is one example, as is that of telling a Usenet poster with habitually poor grammar that he is "a clueless moron, unfit to soil the pant legs or befoul the shoes of even alt.teenagers.who.speak.l33t".
Technically, the Cliche Kitty label is supposed to be funny because homosexuals are allegedly inferior, and thus labelling Cliche Kitty a homosexual must be true since Cliche Kitty is already known to be inferior, and so one can make the charge stick (even though it might not be literally true), and that process is enjoyable.

There is a certain sick pleasure to be derived from watching Amis take some sad sack (usually American) novelist apart for failing to comprehend proper syntax or the full meaning of a word used carelessly.
Although THE WAR AGAINST CLICHÉ is composed of reviews published from 1971 to 2000, two coherent arguments emerge from the text.
The trouble with THE WAR AGAINST CLICHÉ --- and the joy of it --- is that Amis doesn't seem to realize this.

It's an idea for a cliche count for movies, as a way to measure their worthiness.
Nowhere is a proposal for an invention but quite evident is a snide call for an end to movies--or to those who make such movies--that use cliche as key components of their plots and characters.
