Click of death - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The click of death is a failure mode typical of Iomega Zip drives.
In all cases, the click of death is characterized by a noticeable clicking or buzzing sound and is usually caused by a head crash.
Iomega received thousands of complaints about the click of death, but denied all responsibility — often claiming, to the fury of Zip drive owners, that the problems were caused by the use of (functionally identical) third-party media.

click of death   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The clicking noise is caused by the drive's read/write head bumping against its movement stops when it fails to find track 0 on the disk, causing the head to become misaligned.
There is evidence that the click of death is a communicable disease; a “clicked” disk can cause the read/write head of a "clean" drive to become misaligned.
Iomega at first denied the existence of the click of death, but eventually offered to replace free of charge any drives affected by the condition.

Legal Definitions of Death   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The common law standard for determining death is the cessation of all vital functions, traditionally demonstrated by "an absence of spontaneous respiratory and cardiac functions." There is, then, a potential disparity between current and accepted biomedical practice and the common law.
Time of death is a fact to be determined with all others in each individual case, and may be resolved, when in doubt, upon expert testimony before the appropriate court.
Death is to be pronounced before artificial means of supporting respiratory and circulatory function are terminated and before any vital organ is removed for purpose of transplantation.

Alpha-Pro.Net | In A Nutshell: IOmega Drives's Click of Death
The click of death is a problem in IOmega Zip and Jazz drives, although it seems to be more common in Zip drives.
A click is normal when you first insert a disk into the drive, or when you use the disk after the drive went to sleep.
Unfortunately, the clicks of death may be a late symptom of a drive problem.

A source who has identified himself as a former Iomega technician has said the clicking sound is caused by the read/write head bumping against its movement stops--bumpers that keep the head within its intended range--while searching for and not finding track 0 on the Zip disk.

What IS the "Click Of Death"?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Click Of Death, Click Death, and COD are names describing the first symptom of a set of serious data threatening problems being encountered with increasing frequency among users of Iomega's Zip and Jaz removable media mass storage systems.
Without any warning a Click Of Death drive begins emitting a series of audible and distinctive clicking sounds, either when a cartridge is first inserted or when attempting to read or write data to or from a previously inserted cartridge.
The word "Death" appears in the names for this problem since that's exactly what occurs in real life: Minutes, hours, or days after the clicking is first heard, the drive -- and usually one or more of the user's cartridges -- suddenly dies without warning.

Biology, Consciousness, and the Definition of Death
This standard is often met prior to whole-brain death, which includes death of the brainstem -- that part of the brain which allows spontaneous respiration and heartbeat but is insufficient for consciousness.
The concept of death applies not only to humans, but also to nonhuman animals and plants; it is a biological fact that all organisms live and die.
Perhaps a reconstruction of the term "death" is justified in its application to the special case of human beings.

The death from a heart attack of 28-year-old ice skating champion Sergei Grinkov could help doctors unlock the secrets of his tragic condition.
The gene is carried by approximately 20% of the population, and as such early deaths are incredibly rare, there must be other factors at work.
The eventual aim is not just to identify those few whose genetic makeup puts them at high risk of early death, but also to help patients who have survived a heart attack avoid another one.

If your Zip or Jaz drive begins emitting a series of audible and distinctive clicking sounds, either when a cartridge is first inserted or when attempting to read or write data to or from a previously used cartridge, it is time to worry.
The clicking is an audible indication of a drive that is having trouble accessing the data on a cartridge, and if a cartridge that was clicking in one drive is inserted into another drive, the second drive might also click.

 Click of Death
Continued clicking is a symptom of an unreadable disk, usually one which has been damaged by a Zip or Jaz drive incorrectly writing to the disk.
COD can also be cause by strong magnetic fields or the lubricant on the disk decomposing, leaving deposits on the drive head, which magnetizes the heads and causes them to come together early, running into the edge of the disk medium itself.
COD is not something most users can expect to see, but every Zip and Jaz user should be prepared for it.

A substantial number of Zip Drives have developed a problem commonly known as the “Click of Death,” which renders the Drive useless and damages the disk such that any data on the disk is lost.
It appears that the Click of Death can damage an otherwise unaffected Drive by the use of a disk that is already corrupted.
You put that "Clicked" disk in another Zip drive that has never had this problem and it tries to read/write to some of the damaged (bad) blocks on it created by the "clicking" and it starts "clicking" too.

In the end I did feel that Becker got somewhat carried away with his insight that the denial of death is the key to understanding people's deepest neuroses - he took it to what I felt was the extreme that it is simply impossible to transcend the denial of death.
People who have had near death experiences in many cases seem to have overcome the fear of death, people who have mastered Eastern disciplines like meditation have done the same, and finally self-actualized people who simply live knowing that they are souls having a physical experience can also overcome the angst of physical mortality.
The denial of the absolute uncertainty of death (and uncertainty in general) could thus be a more profound form of denial.

With Iomega Zip and Jaz drives, what is the Click of Death?
"Click of Death" is the colloquial term for the distinctive sound that a Zip drive's read head makes when it becomes misaligned and cannot read a Zip disk.
The sound is caused by the head repeatedly hitting the end of its range in an ineffectual attempt to find the first track of the disk.
