The Business of Software - Google AdWords/AdSense ClickFraud
The super-duper top secret internal Google clickfraud prevention system, which is supposed to deduct the invalid clicks at the end of the month, only seems to catch an extremely small fraction of the clicks, but not nearly enough.
Clickfraud is obviously more prominant on adsense sites than on search ads since there is no direct financial motivation to click on your ads when they appear in search results.
Clickfraud would not be an easy case is court either, it would be very difficult to prove that the ad *you publish* is frauduently being clicked on and it is Google's fault.

John Battelle's Searchblog: Other Shoe on Keyword Prices, Clickfraud
One of the most interesting, from my point of view, is clickfraud.
I've been talking at length to a fellow who is a significant advertiser on Google and other paid search networks, and he is literally exhausted from chasing down all the fraud that is plaguing his ad buys, and really angry with Google for not being responsive to his requests for relief.
See that URL for a link to a SEMPO released survey of its members with 5 questions on clickfraud, though that survey was done way back in the halcyon days of Dec. 2004...

Techdirt: Did Google Let Clickfraud Case Drop, Rather Than Reveal Clickfraud Details?
Google may have then been concerned that revealing any of that info could either help other fraudsters, or give more ammo to various advertisers who are intent on suing Google over being charged for ads that are fraudulently clicked.
The main way that clickfraud benefits the person committing the fraud is when they are doing it to a competing company.
Google would not have to reveal anything about clickfraud to prove that the guy was engaging in flmail.

Techdirt: With Profits Like These, Most Advertisers Don't Seem Worried About Clickfraud
Of course, if clickfraud was really that big a problem, then you would think they'd start taking their business elsewhere.
However, as part of the deal, an independent study was commissioned to look into the issue -- and that study has now said Google is doing a pretty good job in controlling clickfraud.
However, perhaps when your revenue and profits just keep going up, it just doesn't matter -- which also suggests that plenty of advertisers don't seem to be all that worried about clickfraud.

Clickfraud: Whose Problem, FTC, Search Engines Or Advertisers? [SearchEngineWatch]
Adam Penenberg takes the US Federal Trade Commission to task for not doing more to prevent clickfraud in his Wired commentary, Click Fraud Threatens Web.
Interestingly, neither make use of the word "fraud" in relation to clickfraud activity, preferring the more euphemistic "invalid click," as far as I can tell.
That firm also specializes in clickfraud detection, so it's obviously in its interest for the stats to sound as scary as possible.

Click fraud - Is someone draining your pay per click account?
The term "Clickfraud" may sound like a buzz word these days but it's really a crime of "fraud" pure and simple.
The crime is that someone may be just clicking on your PPC campaigns for the purpose of draining your wallet.
You can imagine the impact this can have on competitive businesses that may be paying upwards of $6.00 to $10.00 per keyword.

No "my EPC has droppped" threads
Despite some subjects being obvious candidates for a drop in clickthroughs/sales in December we are strangely devoid of the complaint threads.
Elsewhere, there seem to be serious concerns about clickfraud, organised clickfraud, and fraudsters using malware to compromise machines around the world to commit little bits of undetectable click fraud for them (perhaps to topple a competitor advertiser).
The extent of this clickfraud is not something you would be aware of.

In fact, its reasonable to presume that the "hotter" the sales of a product, the more vulnerable to click fraud the keywords related to that product are.

 Google ClickFraud Settlement Issues
I'm sure most of you noticed MarketingShift now has a new sponsor and as a result of talking with this sponsor I decided to do a bit of research on the landmark Google clickfraud class action lawsuit, especially the settlement portion, to get up to speed.
To be quite honest I was shocked at what I found in my own research and in speaking with our own advertiser as well as other industry experts.
I highly recommend going to the AdWords forum and doing some of your own research with other AdWords advertisers and looking at the question / answers Google has already posted on Click Fraud in AdWords and actively monitor your campaign and getting up to speed on their terminology.

The damning proof that google loves clickfraud - Google Blogoscoped Forum
Yet until March of this year, Google executives decided to keep charging advertisers for TWO CLICKS for each doubleclick, because they were worried about the impact removing those invalid clicks might have to their financial bottom line.
If Google were even remotely serious about stopping clickfraud- they would do one thing RIGHT THIS MOMENT- they would give advertisers the IPs of each click, and they would give the time and date of those clicks.
This would allow advertisers to accurately do log checks and see for themselves if there is massive fraud going on or not.

In other (possibly) Google related news, the New York Times reports how some major Madison-type clients are standing up against click fraud.
The topic of clickfraud isn’t new, nor is the handwringing that accompanies most articles, but what is interesting is how, with the strength of their purchasing power, are collectively demanding more accountability out of companies that sell click based advertising (read: Google)
A group of large companies, including Kimberly-Clark, Colgate-Palmolive and Ford Motor have said that by the middle of 2007, they will demand that online publishers hire auditors to check their ad and viewer counts.

Reyes later comments accurately that clickfraud is not just a Google problem.

Google provides incentive to Webmasters to roll out tons of useless pages remixed content pages, which are only half-justified by links back to the original source.

We've uncovered what looks to be a case of someone mangling a piece of fairly recent infection code to perform what is basically Botnet-style clickfraud, without the Botnet (or the automated clicks).
In theory, this may resemble "normal" clickthrough traffic and not raise any suspicion.
What will be interesting to see is if some of the smaller Botnet guys ditch their technical woes and jump on the much-easier-to-maintain Instant Messaging Bandwagon to get their clickfraud kicks...

IEEE Spectrum: When Good Clicks Go Bad
Back in July of this year, Dallas Mavericks owner and heart-on-his-sleeve blogger Mark Cuban (http://www.blogmaverick.com) said in a blog post, “There has been a slight upturn in the debate over clickfraud.” Hey, wait a minute, I said to myself, when did the phrase click fraud become the word clickfraud?
But the new compound clickfraud isn’t the only neologistic action in this area.
In that same Cuban post, he also used the word clickfraudsters (people who engage in clickfraud), a term that already has a bit of traction among bloggers.

Techdirt: Does Yahoo Have An Adware Clickfraud Problem?
Just as Google's CEO is somehow magically claiming that the company can prevent clickfraud (which, of course, is being received skeptically), Ben Edelman has taken a look at Yahoo's relationship to the spyware/adware world -- and how clickfraud associated with those relationships may be scamming advertisers out of plenty of money.
The details are a bit complex, but basically, plenty of advertisers may be getting charged for clicks that never occurred on un-targeted ads from software they didn't realize they were advertising on -- all because they thought they bought some targeted search advertising.
Edelman notes that this is going to continue to be a problem for Yahoo, unless they are much more active in monitoring who is using their ads while at the same time beefing up their own systems for catching clickfraud early and often.
