Cliff Allison, Formula One driver with Lotus and Ferrari, has died aged 73.
Cliff was involved with every major step Lotus made in the heady days of 1957/8, which saw Lotus move into F1 and F2, launch the Elite and the Seven, clean up at Le Mans and introduce the Fifteen sports car.
Cliff Allison's achievements have not been properly appreciated.

Henry Clifford Allison was born in Brough, a town in the Eden Valley, at the foot of the Pennines hills.
Cliff’s father and uncle were both motorcycle racers but he did not start racing until 1952 when he acquired a Cooper-Norton Formula 3 car, which he debuted at Charterhall in 1952.
It would be three years before Allison won anything but then he did sufficiently well to catch the attention of Lotus’s Colin Chapman, impressed by the fact that Allison had beaten the Cooper works drivers.

Cliff Allison, who has collapsed and died, aged 73, while driving near his home, was a member of that elite band of British racing drivers to be recruited by the Ferrari formula one team.
Allison came closest to winning a world championship at the wheel of a spindly little Lotus 12 in the 1958 Belgian grand prix, on the daunting Spa-Francorchamps road circuit.
Allison raced at a time when they were meagrely rewarded, and recounted how he made the gruelling trip from Cumbria to Maranello on a fortnightly basis.

Allison loved the 'ring, recalling "One of the reasons I enjoyed it is that a lot of the little roads in the Lake District, close to home, were very similar to it."
That, and the reception he got on his return to the Grand Prix paddock, did not compensate for the lost career, but one of the finest fellows in the sport quietly admitted that he was overcome to discover that he had not been forgotten.

A further link I found in common with Cliff was with the arm of my family in Cumbria, a number of who competed in what was called Sulkies also known as Harness Racing or Trotting - a form of horse racing where the jockey sits in a two wheeled kart close behind the horse.
Suffering severe facial injuries, Cliff was hospitalised in the principality for a long time and was out of the rest of the season but in those days such injuries were nearer the bottom of the scale of seriousness for this was a time when death was a real possibility.

Cliff Allison (born February 8 1932 in Brough, Westmoreland, England – died April 7 2005 in Brough, (now) Cumbria) was a Formula One driver who participated during seasons 1958 to 1961 in the Lotus, Scuderia Centro Sud and Ferrari teams.
He suffered a major crash behind the wheel of his Ferrari while practicing for the 1960 Monaco GP and it took him almost the rest of the year to recover from the injuries.
Allison's also provided the village bus service, which Cliff Allison would drive.

So Allison drove a Maserati entered by Scuderia Centro Sud, but all refenences I have seen has him using number '18', the Team Lotus number from his Lotus 16.
Cliff did nothing spectacular with the Maser....but when his American namesake drove for Ferrari....
