Cliffhanger (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cliffhanger is a 1993 action movie directed by Renny Harlin and starring Sylvester Stallone and John Lithgow.
The film was nominated for Worst Picture in the 1993 Golden Raspberry Awards and is considered unrealistic in many aspects by the climbing community.
The film was originally rated NC-17 by the MPAA on account of its violence.

In the run-up to the budget, representatives of the studios were worrying that further changes to the film tax relief rules in Britain could cause a number of funding deals to fall through.
Partnerships comprising self-employed higher-rate taxpayers were formed to acquire the rights to a film, setting off their expenditure against other income and so making use of the tax relief immediately.
The film would then be leased back to the producer and the investors would pay tax on the lease rental stream over a 15-year period.

DVD Verdict Review - The Cliffhanger
Mixing film noir with music-video vision, a healthy dose of David Lynch's twisted universe, and occasional bows to Tarantino and that other David—Cronenberg—this sinister sexual thriller is a complex, mysterious mesh of styles and substance that paints a daunting, if sometimes derivative, look at the seedy underbelly of life.
While the film tells an overall story that is involving, inventive, and occasionally difficult to stomach (anytime you invoke abuse and incest, the sensitivity sensors light up), it cannot decide on a tone or a temperament.
As for the film itself, the 11 different directors and cinematographers, let alone 11 different assortments of technical equipment and levels of competency, means the visual and aural fundamentals of this photoplay are uneven.

 DVD Review: Cliffhanger
Cliffhanger opens with a scene so often repeated that I think there must be a law in Hollywood that it must appear in any movie involving a mountain (but perhaps never done better than in this film).
This disc is a good presentation of just the film, but if special features are important to you, then this is probably not enough of an improvement to justify buying this edition over (or in addition to) the SE release.
Cliffhanger is rated R primarily for language and violence.

Cliffhanger may claim to be an all-action special effects and stupendous scenery movie, but for me the highlight was seeing Pa Walton as a helicopter pilot.
Anyway, as a film, Cliffhanger actually is an all-action special effects and stupendous scenery movie, with Sly being allowed to flex his muscles and do his best you-killed-my-buddy-and-now-you're- gonna-damn-well-pay act, all the time suspended on a frayed bit of rope suspended 17 million feet above the ground.
Cliffhanger's action does not stop; from the first 5 minutes right until the end, it is action all the way.

Cliffhanger was a 1994 comeback of sorts for action hero Sylvester Stallone, this time thanks to director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) and some spectacularly rugged and vertigo-inducing, high-mountain terrain.
The stronger cut of Cliffhanger had already been passed as 15 on tape in its pan-and-scan version, but since the film had never before been released on video or DVD in Widescreen it had to be resubmitted to the BBFC as a new film, and was no longer allowed to be a 15 without cuts!

Back in the heyday of Saturday matinees, one of the more entertaining types of films were the cliffhangers.
Subsequent films and then TV shows such as "Batman" used the format to their advantage in keeping the audience guessing and then tuning in.
After a harrowing and still gripping opening sequence, the film zips along a not altogether unpredictable storyline, with Sylvester Stallone's character encountering and then dispatching the film's many villains.

Donner's film, which was shelved by the studio for several years before being dumped for television release, is one of the silliest films ever made about the Arthurian legend.
The charges leveled against the film are generally that the lead roles were miscast, that the direction was ponderous, and that, at nearly three hours, the film was too long.
Clearly, Zucker intends his film to be an Arthuriad for the 1990s, but the film fails to capture the spirit of the original legend or to make a case for its contemporary translation of the oft-told story of the Arthur-Lancelot-Guinevere love triangle.

Whether Cliffhanger will bring Stallone's name back into the top echelon of action movie stars has yet to be determined, but if this film can't, the task may be impossible.
Sure, the movie borrows from other action films (most notably the original Die Hard), but it does so in a big, bold way, and there's enough new stuff to keep scenes fresh.
