Topic: Clifford D Simak

The Templeton Gate - Authors - Clifford D. Simak
Simak displays an unwavering faith in humanity, and coupled with the pastoral views of the land around the house and the simple beauty of the untamed wilderness, produces a novel of quiet strengths and boundless optimism.
Simak's next novel, Out of Their Minds (1970) would also prove to be primarily comical, with the main character's discovery that all things are possible, with mythical and fictional figures coming to life at the merest thought of their existence.
It is highly possible that Clifford Simak is a relatively unknown name to the majority of recent SF readers, and that of course would be a shame if it is true.

Simak has written a lot of books and stories about the presence of the supernatural in mundane situations, but I can't recall one that does it so well -- nor so whole-heartedly -- as 'Reservation.' Ghosts, time travel, goblins, færie, dragons, politics, aliens, Neanderthals -- all intermix here on an University campus.
The Goblin Reservation is Clifford D. Simak's synthesis of science fiction and European faerie lore within a murder mystery, with a little historical revisionism on the side.
Simak did not see fit to include the recipe for making sweet October ale (the favorite drink of goblins and trolls, and much favored by humans who can rarely get a tankard of it).

 Desertion by Clifford D. Simak
Clifford D. Simak was one of the finest modern sf writers.
The idea of shape-shifting is very old in folklore, and beguiling, but combining it with the superiority of an alien consciousness in an alien form lends it a new and science fictional seduction.
Simak invented a new mode of transcendence for the human mind and spirit in this story that, once experienced, is so nearly impossible to reject that humanity cannot.

 Clifford Simak Fan Page: Writings
Classic early Simak, my 1967 Paperback Library, Inc. (New York) edition says it was based on a short novel originally published in 1939 by Street and Smith Publications, Inc. A woman has spent a thousand years in suspended animation, however her brain remained awake.
I felt this was one of Clifford's weaker efforts, since most of the narrative (press and political response) seemed to be removed from the actual action (aliens have landed!).
Simak's last published novel before his death in 1988, it is also one of his best.

Clifford D. Simak was one of the major voices of the Golden Age of Science Fiction.
Simak has crystallized the concerns of a whole generation of science-fiction writers in a story that is poetic in its outlook if not in its diction.
It's simply a very good book, a solidly constructed story about the wonders of a universe we barely know, fraught with the unease of realizing we may finish ourselves off before we ever have a chance to understand it, ameliorated by the hope that we may, perhaps, learn better, if we give ourselves the chance.

Clifford D. Simak's Way Station is simply one of the most original and best SF novels ever written.
Clifford D. Simak's "Way Station" was first published under the title "Here Gather the Stars" in Galaxy Magazine in two parts in June and August of 1963.

Simak's heroes are heroes in the way that any of us could be heroes in the right circumstances, not supermen.
Simak offers many interesting ideas and a good overall plot, but the book has a bit of a cardboard, comic-booky feeling to me, with the characters and their actions and dialogue a little cliched.

There is a definite sense of wonder when Simak compares the Jupiter experienced by the recently transformed main character (and his dog, of course!) with the planet as seen through human eyes.
Simak was never much one for action and adventure, he excelled in building character and scene, of conveying mood (especially a "pastoral" mood).

 Clifford D. Simak, City
Old Earth Books has done us the signal service of reissuing two of Simak's most memorable works in honor of the centennial of his birth in 1904, of which City is one.
Simak says in his Author's Foreword that City was written out of disillusion: "City," the first story in the series, was published in 1944, in the closing years of the most destructive war in human history, and most of these stories come from the mid- and late 1940s.
These stories are absorbing, and the visionary quality is something that contemporary writers in the field seem to have lost to a large extent, though not entirely.
