Entering the political arena in 1981, Mr Forsythe was elected to the Newtownabbey Council and later went on to become Mayor of the town.
Mr Forsythe was one of 15 unionist MPs who resigned their seats in protest at the Anglo Irish Agreement and sought then sough re-election in 1986.
