John Ower- "Aesop" and the Ambiguity of Clifford Simak's City
Simak's abrupt shift from the cobbly to barely civilized terrestrial carnivores links the outworld predator with the "Blood hunger" that the dogs are striving to eliminate from earth.
Simak is now implying that the greatest threat to the benevolent plans of the dogs comes from man, who combines the killer instinct of the predatory beast with a powerful, mechanically inventive intelligence.
Rather, Simak appears to be synthesizing both views in the perception that it is the savage hatred and anger within Peter which fuels the inspirational courage necessary to overcome his enemy.

Clifford Simak was raised in Wisconsin, and his science fiction combines galactic scope with nostalgia for the old American Midwest.
Clifford Simak, winner of Hugo, Nebula, Grand Master, and other science fiction awards, was never more clearly a master of modern SF than in this novel of a simple farmer who bridged the gap between humanity and the stars.
Simak does none of that-- I find it a virtue of his that while he acknowledges that shadings exist (particularly when it comes to evil, which he usually portrays as misguided bumbling) he at the same time asserts that there is good in the world and that the good can be found.

 Clifford D. Simak
It ought to be stressed that many years before the appearance of Everett's thesis, Clifford Simak had thoroughly described parallel worlds (esp. alternate Earths) in his science-fiction works using almost identical philosophy in a poetic atmosphere and flavor of rural humility and beautiful autumn weather.
Simak was born and raised in Millville (small town in Wisconsin) and became probably the best known proponent of the pastoral science fiction.
Clifford Simak began his career with the first published story The World of the Red Sun (it appeared originally in Wonder Stories 1931 and reissued thanks to Isaac Asimov in Before the Golden Age, Doubleday 1974).

The Templeton Gate - Authors - Clifford D. Simak
Simak displays an unwavering faith in humanity, and coupled with the pastoral views of the land around the house and the simple beauty of the untamed wilderness, produces a novel of quiet strengths and boundless optimism.
Simak's next novel, Out of Their Minds (1970) would also prove to be primarily comical, with the main character's discovery that all things are possible, with mythical and fictional figures coming to life at the merest thought of their existence.
It is highly possible that Clifford Simak is a relatively unknown name to the majority of recent SF readers, and that of course would be a shame if it is true.

Simak is as likely as any of his contemporaries to have bug-eyed monsters land on Earth, but *his* BEMs would probably land in rural Minnesota, and end up discussing their difficulties with some locals over a large stack of pancakes.
Many of Simak's books are closer to the fantasy side of the fence, including The Goblin Reservation (**), which is about what the title implies, and Out of Their Minds (**), an amusing novel in which our myths and fairy tales take objective reality.

More importantly, Simak's yarn about a man of war yearning for peace during turbulent times is so very appropriate today as it was at the height of the Cold War and the beginning of US involvement in Vietnam.
Clifford D. Simak's "Way Station" was first published under the title "Here Gather the Stars" in Galaxy Magazine in two parts in June and August of 1963.

Simak's story of a man (the odd and fascinating Enoch) from the 19th century taken on by 'Galactic Centre' to run a secret stopping-off point for travellers moving from solar system to solar system is a moving, intelligent, and brilliantly imagined classic.
Occasionally the style of the prose feels dated and the 'philosophy' becomes sentimental, but once those brief occasions are accounted for what becomes clear is that 'Way Station' is a novel packed with ideas (both SF and more broadly philosophical) and with a desire to tell a wild and original story.
This is typical Simak at his best - sci-fi in your backyard - in this case literally.
