The Clifton ores were known to Mexican prospectors of the early nineteenth century, who reported the presence of copper in the precipitous mountains north of the Gila River.
The railroad which really sent Clifton’s fortunes soaring and increased the demand for Mexican workmen was the Arizona and New Mexico, which was built through to a junction with the Southern Pacific at Lordsburg in 1882.
Arizona originally received the majority of its Mexican immigrants from Sonora and Chihuahua, but the turn of the century witnessed a tremendous inflow from the villages adjacent to the Mexican railways, including natives of states as far south as Guanajuato, Aguas Calientes, and Michoacan.37 The results were visible in the mining districts.

Clifton's a small mining town in the mountains of Arizona, and its first jail was built in 1878 by blasting two cells out of a solid granite cliff.
The story also says that the stonemason who built the jail, Margarito Verala, went out celebrating after getting his check when the job was done, got drunk, shot up the dance hall, and wound up being the first guest at the new jail.

As you climb from the valley floor up to the top of the pit mine in Morenci, you can get a great view of Clifton down in the valley.
It's hard to imagine living in such an isolated place, but the people there were friendly and seemed to be the sort that could deal with just about anything.
