Nottinghamshire was originally included in the diocese and province of York, and in 1291 formed an archdeaconry, comprising the deaneries of Nottingham, Newark, Bingham and Retford.
Until 1568 Nottinghamshire was united with Derbyshire under one sheriff, the courts and tourns being held at Nottingham until the reign of Henry III, when with -the assizes for both counties they were removed to Derby.
The manufacture of tambour lace existed in Nottinghamshire in the 18th century, and was facilitated in the 19th century by the manufacture of machine-made net.

The Cliftons of Clifton have been men of title and consequence, their position and standing being derivable not alone from their landed possessions, but because of the part their family has played in the affairs of the nation, both civil and military.
There was Sir Gervase Clifton, of Clifton and Hodsock, who was Sheriff of Nottingham and Derby from 1471 to 1477, Receiver-General in those two counties, and Esquire to the body of Edward the Fourth.
Markham changed his name to Clifton, so that the family name, associated in times past with events which form part of the history of the country, is still perpetuated, and the river still flows beneath the home of the Cliftons, of Clifton.

As there is no inscription on either tomb, their identification is a matter of conjecture, but the heraldic bearings testify that they were undoubtedly Cliftons.
The Knight lies on an embattled tomb and his head rests upon his helmet, which is surmounted with the Clifton crest, viz., out of a ducal coronet or, a demi-peacock per pale argent and sable, the wings displayed and counter changed.
Standing at right angles to the south side of the transept is a large and imposing alabaster Altar Tomb, measuring 90 by 61 inches and 40 inches high, to Sir Gervase Clifton, Kt., and his two wives, between whom he is represented lying.

 GENUKI: North Clifton
North Clifton is a small village on the east bank of the Trent, 12½ miles north by east of newark, near a long cliff, in which numerous fragments of urns, bones and scalps have been found, near the spot which is supposed to have been anciently occupied by a castle.
The church, dedicated to St George, stands on an eminence between North and South Clifton, and was re-pewed in 1831.
The Rev. G.C. Gordon M.A. is the curate, and resides at the Vicarage House, South Clifton.

This was the fate of the cutting to the North of the reserve which has since been filled in and now serves as farm land.
A survey of the land in 1978 identified 169 different flowering plants and ferns of which 12 were rare for Nottinghamshire and 7 were in danger of extinction.
A sword and a number of cannon balls were excavated on the hill in 1804 that date back to the English Civil War when the hill was used by a gun battery to bombard Nottingham Castle.

We have trace this family from the settlements in Sussex County Delaware, to early pioneers in Kentucky, settling in an area that would become Owen County in 1803, and on to many areas of the United States after 1850.
