		Clifton is an inner suburb of the English port city of Bristol.
		Although the suburb has no formal boundaries, the name Clifton is generally applied to the high ground stretching from Whiteladies Road in the east to the rim of the Avon Gorge in the west, and from Clifton Down and Durdham Down in the north to Wells Road in the south.
		Clifton is one of the oldest and most affluent areas of the city, much of it having been built with profits from tobacco and the slave trade.

		The Lime on Clifton Down had an electronic survey done to check for decay as there was some fungus infection at the base but, when felled, proved to be sound, and only about 120 years old, younger than anticipated.

	Clifton and Durdham Downs
		In 1676 the Society acquired the Manor of Clifton, then all open country, which included 220 acres of Clifton Down bordering the Avon Gorge.
		The Society agreed with the Corporation of Bristol that if the Corporation would buy it, the Society would join with the Corporation in dedicating 440 acres for the use and enjoyment of the citizens of Bristol in perpetuity.
		This happened and under the provisions of the Clifton and Durdham Downs Act 1861 the Downs are still administered by a Downs Committee appointed in equal numbers by the City Council and the Society.
