		Clifton was recorded in the Domesday book as Clistone, the name of the village denoting a 'hillside settlement' and referring to its position on a steep hill.
		Clifton is one of the oldest and most affluent areas of the city, much of it having been built with profits from tobacco and the slave trade.
		Clifton is home to many buildings of the University of Bristol; Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Clifton Suspension Bridge; the Roman Catholic Clifton Cathedral; Clifton College; Bristol Zoo; The Coronation Tap (a pub); and BBC Bristol.

		Clifton Hill House is an 18th century merchant's house on Clifton Hill and has been used as a Hall of Residence since the foundation of the University in 1909.
		CHH is a landmark in the conception of the villa and belongs to the second generation of Palladianism, with the introduction of dramatic French rococo ceiling carvings in the main Reception Rooms.
		In 1851 Clifton Hill House was bought by Dr. Symonds, a well-known Bristol physician, one of the first practitioner to be appointed to the then new General Hospital and one of the first lecturers in the Bristol Medical School.

		Carn Brea, a hill can be likened to an island, its perimeter clearly defined, with a wide field of interest from archaeology and folklore to military and industrial relics.
		On the hill not far from the castle is a monument that was erected by subscription to the memory of Francis Lord de Dunstanville and Basset of Tehidy (the name of the home of the Basset family).
		While visiting Olive Sorkin, a niece of John Henry Clifton in Camborne, her husband David mentioned that the poor miners who had enough trouble buying food for their families were forced to donate money for this monument while the Basset family lived in the lap of luxury.

	History
		The increasing middle classes continued to settle in Clifton on the hill and the fields which were once market gardens and grazing land soon became covered in Victorian villas and semi-detacheds and Gallows Acre Lane, at the end of which once stood the gibbet, was re-christened Pembroke Road.
		To the north and south of Clifton the scene was not one of prosperity.
		The Hotwell House was finally demolished in 1867 and the water was piped to a pump in a cavern at the foot of the cliff.

		Clifton Hill House (CHH) provides both conference facilities and accommodation for overnight delegates, allowing the conference to be contained within a single venue.
		CHH is also only a short walk away from "the Triangle", which is well served by numerous buses.

		As you walk up Clifton Hill, past the Mews, on the right-hand side is Grove House on the corner which is a very imposing building which looks up Clifton hill towards the Children's Hospital.
		The house called Grove House was originally called Grove Villa and this was the house that John Yearsly actually built for himself, and Yearsly was the man who bought the land from Thomas Read-Kemp and actually developed the whole of the Powis and Clifton area.
		Powis Villas is actually made up of just four houses and this next photograph is number 3 and in the distance you can see the back of Yearsly's house, number 4 Powis Villas and these are lovely again white-painted houses.
