		The second electric tramway in Melbourne's suburbs was opened on the 11th October 1906 and ran from Flemington Bridge (near the terminus of the North Melbourne cable tram route) to Essendon, with a branch to Saltwater River (Now Maribyrnong River) and a short spur along Puckle St Moonee Ponds, to Moonee Ponds railway station.
		The only steam-operated passenger tramway to operate in Melbourne ran from Cheltenham railway station to the Melbourne Home and Hospital for the Aged, a distance of about one mile.
		A two-mile cable tramway was opened by the Clifton Hill, Northcote and Preston Tramway Co. between the M.T.O. cable tram terminus at Clifton Hill and Dundas St Northcote on 18th February, 1890.

		The Encyclopedia of Melbourne will not pretend to be anything other than a product that reflects the concerns of the early 21st century, a time capsule that may be read very differently in another 100 years.

	Northcote, Victoria -
		It was the area further north of present-day Westgarth which saw settlement and development, particularly around the mansion built by William Rucker on Bayview St in 1842 (the area now known as Ruckers Hill).
		The line to Whittlesea was opened in 1891, creating a direct line to Northcote, although the line initially journeyed via Royal Park, Carlton North, and Fitzroy North, before a line was built from Clifton Hill to Melbourne through the suburb of Richmond in 1901 to 1903.
		The northern section of the Inner Circle Line was closed to passengers in 1948, leaving the eastern section (from Melbourne to Clifton Hill, via Richmond and Collingwood).
