Chrysotile - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
There are three known species of chrysotile: clinochrysotile (which is monoclinic), orthochrysotile (which is orthorhombic) and parachrysotile (which is also an orthorhombic polymorph of orthochrysotile).
Clinochrysotile is the monoclinic form of chrysotile and likely the most common variety.
Its type location is unknown although the chrysotile from Asbestos, Quebec, Canada is largely clinochrysotile.

CLINOCHRYSOTILE Chapter 18. Phyllosilicates - layer silicates
Clinochrysotile, a magnesium silicate hydroxide mineral of the serpentine group, was first reported by Aristarain et al.
The serpentine reported by Shannon and Larsen (1926) is clinochrysotile, and that described as chrysotile by Foshag (1926) is largely clinochrysotile.
Clinochrysotile is the dominant serpentine- group mineral at both ore deposits, occurring in late-stage veins and as replacements.

Antigorite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antigorite is a monoclinic mineral from the kaolinite-serpentine group.
It is a polymorph of clinochrysotile, lizardite, orthochrysotile and parachrysotile.
It was first described and got its name from the Antigorio valley, Novara province, Piedmont, Italy.

Serpentine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is found mainly in Maryland and Pennsylvania, USA.
The most common of the serpentines, chrysotile, is actually a group of polytypes: monoclinic clinochrysotile, and orthorhombic orthochrysotile and parachrysotile.
These are the fibrous asbestiform serpentines, accounting for over 90% of all asbestos in use.

Magnetite mineralisation in the andesites is associated with Fe-chlorite, talc and clinochrysotile, whereas replacement of the underlying dolostone includes magnetite-amphibole-serpentine associations.
The age of the Pampa de Pongo deposit is uncertain, although the preferred genetic model for the district involves a large metal flux coeval with deep-seated Jurassic, and probably Cretaceous age igneous intrusive activity.

 Delineation of Suture Zones
In some cases, the distribution of linear belts of mafic rock units and serpentinised ultramafic sequences can be used to constrain the approximate locations of suture zones.
Serpentinites are readily distinguished from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) by using procedures that take advantage of the distinctive spectral reflectance of these rocks caused by the abundance of antigorite, lizardite, clinochrysotile, and magnetite.
The method employs a threshold classifier based on three reflectance ratios: (1) band 5/7 for estimating the abundance of hydroxyl-bearing phases, (2) band 5/1 for magnetite content, and (3) band 5/4 x band 3/4 for the abundance of Fe-bearing aluminosilicates.
