Amphibole and phlogopite (and associated clinopyroxene) are key indicators of modal mantle metasomatism related to the percolation of high alkaline and carbonatitic melts throught the previously depleted upper mantle.
The clinopyroxene is interstitial and associated with euhedral spinel and phlogopite.
Clinopyroxenes in hydrous harzburgite are characterised by enrichment in REE (fig 1), particularly in LREE with a (La/Yb)n=10, a depletion in LILE and Nb, Ta, and negative anomalies in Pb, Ti, Sr, and Zr.

 LITHOLOGY
Pigeonite is a clinopyroxene characteristic of subalkaline volcanic rocks, and its presence confirms the petrographic classification of tholeiitic basalts.
The segregation vesicles have acicular to skeletal plagioclase, subhedral to anhedral, equant to prismatic clinopyroxene, and needlelike or trellised iron titanium oxides in a devitrified glassy matrix.
Absence of the magmatic oxides, ilmenite and magnetite, is a characteristic of gabbroic cumulates from the ocean crust (e.g., Natland and Dick, 1996).

11), the clinopyroxene granite gneiss is relatively undeformed.
As clinopyroxene disappears and quartz increases, the proportions of residual feldspars increase so that the gneiss is converted into a felsic alaskite, consisting almost entirely of quartz and feldspars but containing trace amounts to 5 vol.
In that process the garnet requires less silica in its structure than the clinopyroxene, and, therefore, some silica was left over to form quartz, either as tiny inclusions in the garnet or as separate crystals, increasing the modal percentage of quartz in the rock.

These rocks are composed of seriate-textured to porphyritic oligoclase-andesine, clinopyroxene, and relict ?hornblende or ?orthopyroxene, now pseudomorphed by amphibole and chlorite, in a matrix of K-feldspar and minor quartz.
Clinopyroxene phenocrysts have euhedral but ragged (corroded) outlines up to 2 mm in diameter and are mantled by pale olive green amphibole (?hornblende) in parallel position.
The creamy-coloured areas surrounding the mottles appear to be composed mainly of secondary alkali feldspar, possibly of oligoclase composition to judge by the relief against quartz, and lesser pyroxene and quartz, all forming subhedra mainly <0.2 mm in size.

The mineral-in curves for olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and spinel all converge on the liquidus at about 12 kbar demonstrating that ID-16 melt is saturated in the plagioclase/spinel peridotite assemblage at this pressure.
At 15 kbar, clinopyroxene (+spinel) replaces olivine as the liquidus phase and is followed by orthopyroxene, plagioclase, olivine, and finally, garnet.
Although clinopyroxene persists on the liquidus to at least 20 kbar, garnet is the second phase to crystallize at this pressure.

Clinopyroxene (Cpx) is similar to Opx, except Cpx has higher interference colors (is more colorful).
Orthopyroxene has lower interference colors compared to clinopyroxene (like augite); thus, the orthopyroxene tends to be gray in color, while clinopyroxene tends to be pink, blue, and yellow.
Orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene also have high relief when the polars are uncrossed and are much less clear than olivine.

Partitioning behaviour of Hf and Zr between amphibole, clinopyroxene, garnet, and silicate melts at high pressure.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Partition coefficients (D) have been determined for Hf (mainly) and Zr for amphibole, clinopyroxene and garnet crystallizing from Zr and Hf enriched basanite and andesite compositions at 0.5-3.0 GPa and 1000 - 11000C (basanite) or 900 - 9500C (andesite).
Also, for amphibole and clinopyroxene DZr and DHf correlate strongly with DTi,and the pressure effect on Dís is most noteworthy between 0.5 and 1.5 GPa (about a 3-fold decrease in DHf for amphibole).
Thus constancy of Sm/Zr in mantle melts cannot be attributed to a balance of clinopyroxene and garnet involvement.

The secondary clinopyroxenes with interfingering textures plot between the magmatic clinopyroxenes and the clinopyroxenes near the high-temperature microscopic veins.
Orthopyroxene is a subordinate mineral in the olivine gabbros, occurring as magmatic rims on cumulus grains of olivine and as blebs in intergrowths with brown amphibole in clinopyroxene grains both near the high-temperature microscopic veins and within the interfingering textures.
Amphibole blebs in clinopyroxene from the interfingering areas are plotted in the field of pargasite, and those near the high-temperature microscopic veins are in the fields of pargasite, edenite, and magnesiohornblende.

The distribution of latent heat across the liquidus-solidus intervals of the two samples is distinctly different, reflecting significant variation in the sequence and abundance of mineral phases during melting (clinopyroxene and leucite in the ugandite; olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase in the basalt).
This is due to cotectic precipitation of leucite and clinopyroxene, leading to a large, disproportionate release of latent heat early in the crystallization sequence.
The results indicate that clinopyroxene is the most important mineral phase in controlling the shapes of the enthalpy profiles during cooling; this is due to its large enthalpy of fusion and its tendency for sluggish nucleation, followed by rapid crystallization at temperatures that vary with cooling rate.

From estimated residual melt fraction after the symplectite precipitation in the Vitim area, we suppose, that eutectic clinopyroxenes must be more evolved than observed ones.

The xenoliths span a range of equilibration temperatures from 1150 to 1500 K (calculated at an assumed pressure of 1.5 GPa from two-pyroxene geothermometry), allowing the trace-element partitioning relationships among the phases (olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, spinel, and in some lower temperature xenoliths, amphibole) to be quantified as a function of temperature.
Although most incompatible trace elements are concentrated into clinopyroxene, the effect of increasing temperature is to redistribute these elements into orthopyroxene and even olivine, such that these latter phases hold non-negligible proportions of many trace elements at the temperature at which peridotite would be in equilibrium with basaltic melts.
The inter-crystalline trace-element partition coefficients reported in this study can be used to reconstruct the trace-element abundances in clinopyroxene at melting temperatures, and should also prove useful in elucidating the histories of more complex mantle peridotites with unequilibrated mineral compositions and textures.

Granulitic assemblages consist of plagioclase (labradorite), clinopyroxene and variable amounts of orthopyroxene, red-brown amphibole (Ti-rich pargasite), garnet, green spinel, magnetite, ilmenite, biotite, apatite, zircon, sphene.
Clinopyroxene may be also replaced by epidote + chlorite+ sphene (together with green hornblende).
The extent of this retrogression is extremely variable: some samples show only negligible amounts of acicular green amphibole locally rimming clinopyroxene, whereas other rocks are almost completely converted into a low-temperature assemblage consisting of sericite + actinolite + chlorite ± epidote + Fe-Ti oxides.

Symplectite clinopyroxene from Vitim alkaline basalts corresponds to the low-Mg end of the clinopyroxene megacryst trend.
Modeling of fractional crystallization of clinopyroxene from alkaline basaltic melt indicates that clinopyroxenes from symplectites correspond to the residual melt fraction of 20-40%, which is high for eutectic crystallization.
We suggest that ilmenite-clinopyroxene symplectites characterize the initial stage of simultaneous precipitation of ilmenite and clinopyroxene.

Trace element compositions of clinopyroxene and amphibole from three rift-related alkaline to peralkaline igneous complexes (syenites and granites) in South Greenland reflect evolving magma composition as well as crystal chemical control on partitioning.
A crystal chemical control is also indicated for the REE, since clinopyroxenes and amphiboles show continuous change from LREE-enriched patterns in the calcic minerals via wave-shaped pattern in the Ca-Na minerals towards a more pronounced HREE enrichment in the most Na-rich minerals.
The partitioning of most trace elements between clinopyroxene and co-genetic amphibole is independent of melt composition or major element composition of the crystals.

We are investigating the high-temperature, high-pressure rheological properties of clinopyroxene and olivine, important minerals in the lower crust and/or the upper mantle.
Little is known about the strength of clinopyroxene relative to that of olivine, even when the two phases are present in the same rock as in the mantle.
A careful investigation of the dependence of viscosity on water concentration for aggregates of clinopyroxene and clinopyroxene + olivine is critical in order to address these issues and to model the dynamical behavior of the lower crust and upper mantle.

OH is consistently correlated with megacryst composition, exhibiting trends with Mg# that are similar to those of other minor and trace elements and indicating a record of high-pressure magmatic evolution.
H substitution is not coupled to minor elements in olivine, but may be in ortho- and clinopyroxene.
During differentiation, relative OH enrichment in clinopyroxene and olivine is consistent with proportional dependence on water activity, while that in garnet suggests a higher power law dependence and/or influence of temperature.
