  CLINOZOISITE Chapter16. Sorosilicates and cyclosilicates
Clinozoisite, a calcium aluminum silicate hydroxide mineral of the epidote group, is largely unstudied.
It was subsequently found in 1981 on the 1400 level in the Sterling Mine occurring as a green massive mineral, associated with amphibole, titanite, calcite, diopside, and a possible hydromica.
Later that year it was again encountered at Sterling Hill, in the 935 stope, on the 500 level, as a pale violet mixture of clinozoisite and plagioclase, associated with diopside and calcite.

Epidotes tend to be quite dark, often nearly fl, whereas clinozoisites tend to be light in color, even colorless at times, and often quite transparent, as in the illustration.
I am aware of two chemical analyses of clinozoisite from localities in Pakistan, one of which is given as Alchuri, and the other Hashupa, Skardu.
There is little doubt that the clinozoisites referred to above and those that have been analyzed are all from the same general area, along the northeast side of the Shigar River in the Masherbrum Range, in Pakistan.

With the exception of orthorhombic zoisite (tanzanite and thulite), discussed in the first article on the sorosilicate class of minerals, the members of the epidote group form in the monoclinic crystal system.
Allanite, clinozoisite (the dimorph of zoisite), epidote, hancockite, mukhinite, and piedmontite are members of this group.
Clinozoisite gems of greater than five carats are rare.

 Epidote
Clinozoisite and epidote form a solid solution series related by substitution of Fe for Al.
This view contains high relief clinozoisite surrounded by lower relief quartz (and plagioclase, but the plagioclase cannot be distinguished in this view).
It is possible that both epidote and clinozoisite are present in this rock, but chemical analysis is needed to tell for sure.

Garnet and Clinozoisite from the Nightingale Mining District
The pale green to grayish-green "epidote" noted by early investigators of the district is, for the most part, actually clinozoisite.
The district is known for this clinozoisite, which occurs as euhedral crystals to 2 inches long by a quarter of an inch thick (Smith and Guild 1942).

Clinozoisite formed after metasomatic-hydrothermal reactions, either at the endoskarn zone between intrusive granite aplites and country -rock marbles, or at the outer margin of nodular reaction-skarns between interbedded carbonate and sandstone - pelitic metasedimentary layers.
Clinozoisite occurs as a replacement phase of earlier-formed endoskarn Ca-bearing silicates, mainly after plagioclase, and to a lesser extent, after amphibole, pyroxene, garnet, epidote and scapolite.
Clinozoisite has been studied by means of optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and microprobe analyses.

The pods have cores formed entirely of garnet and clinopyroxene, and rims of pseudomorphous coarse-grained symplectic intergrowths of hornblende and clinozoisite that reflect hydration at moderate to high-P. These hornfelsic rocks are enveloped by a hornblende–clinozoisite gneissic foliation (S1).
Narrow garnet reaction zones, in which hornblende and clinozoisite are replaced by garnet–clinopyroxene assemblages, developed adjacent to fractures and veins that cut S1.
Fine-grained symplectic intergrowths of (1) clinopyroxene and kyanite and (2) clinozoisite, quartz, kyanite and plagioclase form part of the garnet reaction zones and partially replace coarse-grained S1 hornblende and clinozoisite.
