Abandon by Clint Mansell @ Cinemusic
Clint Mansell established himself as a dependable fringe composer on Darren Aronofsky's Pi, and later reteamed with the director, this time with a more classic film music approach, for Requiem For A Dream.
Mansell's music proved effective for the film, even if it was a decidedly lo-tech approach.
Mansell's latest, Abandon, which marks the directorial debut of Traffic screenwriter Stephen Gaghan, is a logical progression for the composer.

Clint Mansell featuring Kronos Quartet - Requiem For A Dream - Review
One of my only problems with the disc (and this is minor, since it is a soundtrack) is that many of the tracks (some are as short as 10 or 20 seconds) don't feel like they are explored fully.
With 33 tracks that total just over 50 minutes of time, sometimes Mansell has moved on to something else completely just as you start getting into a track.
Again, this is mainly related to it being music for the movie (which also jumps around quite quickly sometimes), but it will leave you hanging at points.

 Quick-Click Reviews: Volume 22
Clint Mansell's minimalist score to the disturbing Requiem for a Dream is one that must be categorized with those that deserve the highest marks for its function within the film, yet suffers some when isolated from the images, characters, and story.
Requiem for a Dream could be considered experiemental music, but it really is founded on two very clear elements: first, the crisp performance of the famed Kronos Quartet; second, the employment of synthesizers and digital loops that emit a strange antiquated feel circa 1980.
Mansell uses a handful of string motifs repeatedly throughout the score but in between is a void of minimalistic music that will be difficult for many typical film music enthusiasts to get very enthusiastic over.

Listening to Clint Mansell's score for Darren Aronofsky's drug-addled nightmare "Requiem For A Dream", I still get shivers in my remembering the tragic events of the film via Mansell and the Kronos Quartet's wonderful work.
Mansell and the Kronos Quartet definitely did a great job on melding strings and electronic elements together in different genres of music expressing a full range of human feeling.
For the tense moments in the film, Mansell uses his electronic equipment effectively in nervous, twitchy IDM that works well as an almost transparent background noise for the film, yet works well standing alone, to complement the other tracks.

But perhaps gem is an understatement, it's a diamond and considering that I held reservations due to Katie Holmes' "singing" (she provides a series of tonal 'aaah's and 'laaa's, nothing spectacular on her part) - it all the more deserves to be referred to as such.
Mansell's previous work started on a good foot with Pi and took a good mile leap into the realm of 'amazing' with Requiem For a Dream.

Judging from his track record - most notably on Darren Aronofsky's Pi, and his present Requiem For a Dream - Clint Mansell is not your man. This easily overlooked atmospheric gem is scored for five musicians - namely the modern/minimalist champions the Kronos Quartet, with Mansell himself on electronics.
The main theme from the score is a very sparse three-chord progression, repeated often enough to become engrained in your mind after the opening "Summer Overture".
This is followed right off by "Party," a motif evoking Mansell's electronic work on Pi.

Curiously and by way of a very thin connection, Clint Mansell's score for Sahara is almost Bondian in places, albeit more John Barry as filtered through David Arnold for the recent Brosnan outings.
Mansell's most notable film music credit is for Requiem for a Dream (which I always thought was by Elliot Goldenthal for some reason), plus The Hole, episodes of CSI and, I note from my list, Abandon to which I assigned a single star rating.
The aforementioned Arnold styling is immediately obvious from the brass blasts and suitably excitable percussion section that opens Ironclad.
