Clinton is a village located in Lenawee County, Michigan.
Both the village and township are named in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the governor of New York from 1817 to 1823.

Lenawee County cast thirteen votes at Tecumseh, all of which were for "A. E." Wing, which elected him, but Bidwell contested it on the ground that "A. E." Wing was not a legal ballot, and claimed election.
The people of Michigan were heartily and almost unanimously in favor of state-hood, but they despised the manner in which, as they thought, the state had been robbed of a big piece of her territory on the south.
Lenawee County does not appear to have had a representative in the Legislative Council of the territory until the session of 1830.

Per the "History and Biographical Record of Lenawee County, Michigan" by Bonner: The name was originally spelled Lenawe (note the spelling, and I have found it that way on really old deeds, says Carol Stevens), and was derived from a Shawnee word meaning Indian.
Found in "The Indians of Lenawee County" by Erich A. Von Fange, PhD, c 1988 and 1997: The name Lenawee is said to be a Delaware or Shawnee word for man or Indian.
Michigan residents born in the United States were more apt to have been born in New York than any other state in the Nation.

Lenawee County to the east was the most populous of the counties in this southern tier, with Tecumseh and Adrian its principal towns.
Lapeer and Shiawassee counties in the eastern portion of the fourth tier were in the Saginaw Valley and constituted a unit, along with Saginaw County to the north, distinct from Clinton, Ionia, and Kent to the west.

It is from the word Lenape that the name of Lenawee County is supĀ­posed by some to have been derived, and if so the red man may be said to be held in remembrance, although he has long since left the County, and.
This, of course,' included all of the present state of Michigan, notwithstanding the claims of the colony of Virginia that she had the title to all land northwest of the Ohio River.
Lenawee County, as has been stated, was included in the reservation known as "ConĀ­gress lands," and it might be added that the land within its limits were sold by the Federal government at the statutory price of $1.25 per acre.
