On Nov. 29, Clinton inmate Charles Lewis, 52, was found in his single-occupancy protective-custody cell by an officer making rounds at 12:46 a.m., according to Monday’s release.
All deaths in the state’s 70 prisons are investigated by the department’s inspector general, the State Commission of Correction, the Division of State Police and the county coroner.
The last death before these two at Clinton being investigated as a potential suicide was a hanging that occurred on Oct. 21.

Clinton Correctional Facility Superintendent Daniel Senkowski said Derrick Padgett from Queens County was stabbed in the back and neck around 11:50 a.m.
Padgett, 25, was attacked by two inmates with a sharpened piece of steel during a recreation period, he said.
Padgett has been at Clinton Correctional since June 2001 and is serving 3½ to seven years for criminal possession of stolen property.

The mission of the Sheriff's Department in regard to the Jail is to provide for the effective and efficient operation of a secure and humane correctional facility.
Many inmates are County residents, yet a number of the inmates are boarders which are received from the federal, state, and other county governments, which offsets Clinton County's debt and operating cost of the jail.
Since the County was paying other counties to board prisoners and was continually overcrowded, the County Commission in 1990 decided to build a jail which would house additional Clinton County prisoners and allow for growth.
