 Clinton Davisson - Biography
Clinton Joseph Davisson was born at Bloomington, Illinois, U.S.A., October 22, 1881, son of Joseph Davisson, an artisan, native of Ohio, descendant of early Dutch and French settlers of Virginia, Union veteran of the American Civil War, and Mary Calvert, a school-teacher, native of Pennsylvania, of English and Scotch parentage.
During a part of this period Davisson returned to the University of Chicago for the summer sessions and in August 1908 received a B.S. degree from that institution.
From 1930-1937 Dr. Davisson devoted himself to the study of the theory of electron optics and to applications of this theory to engineering problems.

Davisson received his doctorate from Princeton University and spent most of his career at the Bell Telephone Laboratories.
Then, in 1927, Davisson and Lester H. Germer found that a beam of electrons, when reflected from a metallic crystal, shows diffraction patterns similar to those of X-rays and other electromagnetic waves.
This discovery verified quantum mechanics' understanding of the dual nature of subatomic particles and proved to be useful in the study of nuclear, atomic, and molecular structure.

The French physicist Louis Victor de Broglie suggested in 1924 that because electromagnetic waves show particle characteristics, particles should, in some cases, also exhibit wave properties.
This prediction was verified experimentally within a few years by the American physicists Clinton Joseph Davisson (1881-1958) and Lester Halbert Germer (1896-1971) and the British physicist George Paget Thomson.
They showed that a beam of electrons scattered by a crystal produces a diffraction pattern characteristic of a wave.

Davisson worked with Lester Germer in an experiment in which electrons bouncing off a nickel surface produced wave patterns similar to those formed by light reflected from a diffraction grating, and supporting de Broglie's electron wavelength = (h/p).
