Stripper clip - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is called a 'stripper' clip because the cartridges are 'stripped' off the device when the ammunition is loaded.
As of the early 21st century, firearms that accept stripper clips are rarely used for military purposes; stripper clips do remain in use for refilling the detachable magazines used on a variety of modern rifles, such as the M-16, as they are faster and easier to use than handloading.
A stripper clip is only for loading the magazine and is not necessary for the firearm to function.

The Gun Zone -- Primer on Clips and Magazines
The "stripper clip" is an alternate term for Charger, "stripper" being added to distinguish it from true "clips." Some writers prefer to use "stripper" for a type of charger that is used to load magazines when they are not attached to the weapon.
These differ somewhat from clips used in rifles in that their main function is to facilitate the ejection of the rounds rather than the feeding.
Using "clip" when one means "magazine" is akin to saying "tires" when one actually means "wheels." If it does get the speaker immediately corrected, often unkindly, in newsgroups and on Forums, then such a malaprop marks the user as a hopeless newbie.

Were it common knowledge that Carcanos use clips, and that Mausers, Enfields and Arisakas do not, Owens' news film, and Allen's and Beers' wire-service photos showing the clip in the rifle would have stopped not only the Mauser reports, but all of the earlier reports, if not prevented them.

 Repeating rifle: Encyclopedia topic
A repeating rifle is a single barreled rifle (rifle: A shoulder firearm with a long barrel and a rifled bore) containing multiple rounds of ammunition (ammunition: Projectiles to be fired from a gun) (consisting of primer, powder, and bullet contained in a cartridge).
The cartridges and clip are inserted as a unit into a fixed magazine within the rifle, and the clip is traditionally ejected by the rifle upon firing or chambering the final chamber.
Repeating rifles were a significant advance over the preceding breech loaded single shot rifles when used for military combat as they allowed a much greater rate of fire.
