Topic: Clipper Mimosa

  mimosa
Because Mimosa was carrying passengers, her captain, George Pepperell, took on a crew of 18 which was a larger one than than needed for carrying only cargo.
Clipper captains were not renowned for their good temper in an age when flogging crew was normal.
Or perhaps she suffered the ultimate humiliation for.a clipper of being dismasted and used as a coating barge for the smoke-belching steamships that replaced sail.

The aim is to verify the oral tradition referring to the landing and settlement of the first Welsh colonists in Punta Cuevas, and to confirm that the existing remains belong to this settlement.
When referring to the arrival of the Mimosa in July 1865, Meisen rejects the landing in Punta Cuevas, merely because he considers that it is an unsuitable point.
According to Thomas Jones, Glan Camwy117 the travellers of the Mimosa landed in the western side of the point, that is, in "Bahía Galenses".

 John Davies - Articles
The story of the arrival of the tea-clipper 'Mimosa' at the shores of Patagonia in 1865 and the struggle of the settlers' early years there, has all the ingredients of a large-scale tragedy.
The small group of poor, dispossessed Welsh families who were to make up the first colony, sailed from Liverpool hoping to create a new, free Welsh community, a self-governing extension of the traditions and culture of their land in a new place.
An over-eagerness on the part of the organisers meant that the colony was not prepared for the arrival of the assorted party on board the ex- tea-clipper 'Mimosa', which sailed from Liverpool on 28th May 1865.

Mimosa, the three-masted British-flagged tea clipper, (44 metres long and 447 tons) had sailed from Liverpool with nearly 160 emigrants two months earlier and proceeded non-stop to New Bay, as the site was known then.
The Mimosa, which usually travelled to Australia carrying mining tools, and — on the return trip — tea from China to Britain, was specially chartered for the trip to Patagonia.
By the end of September 1865 all the Mimosa emigrants were settled there.

In 1865 a tea clipper named Mimosa set sail from Liverpool on a two month journey to South America with 159 people on board.
The majority of the pioneers were from the Bala area and on 28 July, 1865, they landed on a bleak beach which later became known as Porth Madryn.
Instead it was a dry desert-like wasteland, and for the first three years, the Welsh settlers had a hard time creating a successful colony.

In 2-acre fields, mimosa planted in rows 6 ft apart and 18 inches apart within rows provided yields of 5.6 and 7.9 tons of dry wood per year when harvested after 1 or 2 years of regrowth, respectively.
Fiber quality and properties of paper made from mimosa were similar to those from sweet gum, which is one of the most widely used hardwoods in the southeast.
However, mimosa required less chemicals, less cooking time and less bleach to produce paper of similar quality, suggesting that its use will result in lower production costs if used alone for pulp and paper production.

The first choice for the new colony was Vancouver Island, in Canada, but gradually an alternative destination began to be considered which seemed to have everything the colonists might need - Patagonia, Argentina.
The first group of settlers, about 150 people gathered from all over Wales, sailed from Liverpool to Patagonia aboard the tea-clipper Mimosa, landing in New Bay (Port Madryn) on 28 July 1865.

The Australian gold rushes of the early 1850's had greatly accelerated demands for goods and services that could only be met by expansion within agriculture, industry and commerce.
The Australian goldfields and the associated demand for passenger ships persuaded shipowner Duncan Dunbar to order the construction of a clipper from the English shipbuilding firm of James Laing and Sons, Sunderland, in 1852.
Named after its influential owner, the new vessel took more than sixteen months to build at a cost of over £30 000.
