		John Clipperton was an English pirate and privateer who fought against the Spanish in the 18th century.
		John Clipperton was born in Yarmouth / Norfolk into a family of seafarers.
		Clipperton later sailed to Batavia in Dutch Indonesia and finally returned to his family in Galway in Ireland in 1722.

		Clipperton Island (French: Île de Clipperton and as the real French name Île de la Passion) is a nine-square-kilometer coral atoll in the North Pacific Ocean, south-west of Mexico and west of Costa Rica, at 10°18′N 109°13′W.
		Clipperton is now almost a desert, as it was during the 19th century, but was covered at 80% with grassland after the Mexican occupation and the introduction of pigs at the beginning of the 20th century.
		Clipperton is often used by the French as a self-deprecating ironic reference to the importance of the French oversea possessions.

		The uninhabited Île Clipperton is a small and extremely isolated atoll of the Eastern Pacific — the easternmost atoll to be found in the Pacific — located about 1,075 km south of Isla Clarion in the Revilla-Gigedo Archipelago.
		Clipperton is roughly circular in shape with an area of 6 km², being around 4 km across (orientated northwest to southeast), with a circumfernece in the region of 12 km.
		An unusaul feature of Clipperton is the 29 m high outcrop of the rugged and volcanic Clipperton Rock that is found on the southeastern side of the atoll.

	Clipperton Island

	Clipperton Island
		Clipperton Island is a barren, ring-shaped coral atoll located 1630 miles south-southeast of San Diego, California, and 1600 miles west of Nicaragua.
		When Clipperton was finally declared as a French possession, the lighthouse was rebuilt and the French settled a military outpost on the island.
		In the late 1930's, Clipperton was visited twice by President Franklin D. Roosevelt who wanted it to become an American possession for use as a trans-pacific air base, and in 1944 he ordered the navy to occupy the island in one of the most secret US operations of WW II.
