All that Clippy can detect is a trivial fact that the email client has been activated by the user, and that some characters have been typed into the body of the client.
Clippy is actually a dumbed down version of the original user agent (perhaps due to resource constraints), and the original test system was non-graphical.

I think Clippy, or any other agent, would be very useful if it’s based on a system-wide agent architecture that monitors user actions in all applications, on any computer, build a comprehensive behavioral profile, and start doing some real work on behalf of the user.
Clippy was based on the research that led to Bob (Nass and Reeves at Stanford back in 1995, more recently BJ Fogg "Persuasive Computing").
I think that clippy has a long way to go before it is able to be anywhere near as helpful as describing what you're trying to do to someone who has done it before.

The real question, according to analysts, is not whether Clippy's glory is worth the price but whether Office XP is. Microsoft may be hard-pressed to convince users to plunk down more dollars for features they did not use in earlier versions of the software, including the recent Office 2000 suite.

If Microsoft had waited a decade to introduce Clippy, it could have taken advantage of the empathic software and of the webcams that stare unblinkingly from the tops of so many monitors.
Two ways it could work: First, if Clippy sensed that you were having trouble (furrowed brow, foaming at the mouth), it could safely assume that help might be appropriate and pop up with some hope of a warm welcome.
