Topic: Clitellata

Simpósio de Biologia Marinha - CEBIMar/USP
Traditionally, Oligochaeta and Hirudinea were combined into Clitellata which was considered as a sister group to Polychaeta; both Clitellata and Polychaeta constituted the phylum Annelida, while Echiura and Pogonophora were treated as separate phyla.
Thus the posterior relocation of the brain, which is inferred as having occurred in the phylogeny of the Clitellata, was demonstrated.
Consequently, position of the supraoesophageal ganglion (brain) in the Clitellata, far behind the prostomium, was regarded as a secondary structural adaptation to a life spent burrowing through relatively firm terrestrial substrates.

As is discussed, the probability of a loss of the nuchal organs in Clitellata is higher, which favours the second hypothesis: that nuchal organs are part of the ground pattern of the Annelida and very likely are an autapomorphy of this group.
In the former, the absence of nuchal organs in the Clitellata is regarded as a secondary character, in the latter as primary.
Since most Clitellata are either limnetic or terrestrial, we must ask which characters are plesiomorphies, taken from their marine stem species without changes.

Sharon Lavoie, a junior biology major from St. David, recently attended the 9th International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaetes held in Wageningen, The Netherlands.
Dr. Gelder and Sharon presented a joint paper entitled, "The identification of species groups in the Branchiobdellida (Clitellata: Annelida), or crayfish worms, using jaw morphology." The results were obtained during Sharon's research project under a Research Methods in Science course taken in fall 2002.
Dr. Gelder presented a second paper entitled, "Autochthonous Branchiobdellidans (Annelida: Clitellata) on the Major Commercial Species of North America Crayfish (Crustacea: Astacoidea) with Information on the Ectosymbionts' Introduction into Eurasia." North American crayfishes have been commercially introduced into many countries around the world except Australia, which bars them.
