 Aesthetics - Clive Bell
Clive Bell (1881-1964) was a British art critic and philosopher of art who defended abstract art.
Bell's theory has obvious philosophical connections to the aesthetics of Immanuel Kant, who also streesed the detachment of aesthetic appreciation from other sorts of interest we might have in an object.
Bell agreed with Moore, and considered aesthetic value to be one of these intuited forms of goodness.

Art ~ Clive Bell ~ eBookMall ~ eBook
Bell was one of the first critics to expand on the theory of aesthetic formalism.
Significant form was the name Bell gave to shapes and colors that naturally evoked a profound feeling — or the aesthetic emotion — in the educated, sensitive viewer.
The magic of Bell’s book is that it managed to make the new art of the modernists appeal to the old-world view of the Victorians and continued to be popular well in to the 1960’s.

Trevor Pateman: "English Formalism and Russian Formalism: Clive Bell and Viktor Shklovsky"
This claim was developed just before the outbreak of the First World War by Roger Fry and Clive Bell working - from their position within what we now call the Bloomsbury Group - to promote the reception in England of Impressionist and post-Impressionist painting.
That is the truth which formalism is strong at recognising, but in Clive Bell's case, mistaken in formulating.
In the sketch of a contrast between Clive Bell and Viktor Shklovsky, I find I have indicated - in a way I did not foresee at the outset - some reasons for thinking that their formalisms are really quite different.

Letters to her sister Vanessa Bell and to her close friend Violet Dickinson refer to writing plans, but these are vague, and don't tell us what it actually was that she was writing.
In fact, the first definite reference to it does not occur in Virginia's writings at all, but in that of her brother-in-law, Clive Bell, who began a diary on the first of January 1908, which he managed to keep for almost a month.
She was miserable; she missed Vanessa unbearably, and at first hated Clive for having taken her away, but she picked up the threads of her life, and made the most important decision of all — that she would become a novelist.

The Geographers : Clive Bell & Sylvia Hallett : CD Reviews : One Final Note
Bell’s similarly deep-seeded humor is equaled only by his penchant for ceaseless sonic exploration, both on releases like the collaborative Sleep it Off and in his numerous discs with Jah Wobble, among many other ventures.
Both Bell and Hallett are insistent on penetrating each instant with whatever sonic and emotive possibility seems most appropriate to the moment—certainly nothing new in that—but The Geographers blends musicality with intense but subdued experimentation that is satisfying and wittily surprising.
Gone is any busyness apparent in the duo’s 2004 Freedom of the City set (also available on Emanem) in favor of the quieter, more spacious aesthetic evident in Hallett and Bell’s other recent projects.
