Cricinfo - Clive Lloyd calls for disaster-relief fund   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Clive Lloyd, who lost two close friends in the recent earthquake disaster in South Asia, has appealed to the International Cricket Council to set up a disaster-relief fund, to enable the sport to contribute in the event of future catastrophes striking their member nations.
Lloyd, the former West Indies captain, is currently in Durban, where he is acting as match referee for England's Test against South Africa, and on Monday both teams took the field wearing fl armbands as a mark of respect for those affected.
Lloyd's plan would involve a small donation every year, perhaps 2% or 3% of advertising revenue from around the world, and he hoped that a proportion of the gate receipts from the current Boxing Day matches would be given to help the relief effort.

Lloyd was not prepared to be Mr Nice Guy and go home the loser; by his logic if one sent in a bowler at number three then that player should also be prepared to face bowling of the sort which a number three usually did.
The bunch of islanders who were known for their attractive cricket were slowly moulded into a team which began to be known as one which would push hard for victory, one which would not crumble under pressure, one which was devoted to the idea that winning was the sole thing in the game.
Lloyd gave them pride in being a team, not a bunch of brilliant individuals; he gave them better pay and better conditions; he gave them something to play for more than the thrill of smashing the ball to the fence and being out next ball.

Clive Lloyd made his first-class debut as a left-hand middle-order batsman in the then British Guiana in 1963-64 and played for Haslingden in the Lancashire League in 1967.
Lloyd was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1971 for his performances in the previous 12 months, when he'd scored 1600 runs for Lancashire at 47.
It was a frustrating period for Lloyd, whose hands were tied by the decision not to appoint him as a full selector (although he was a selector while on tour), and whose responsibilities became increasingly administrative.

Dravid had told Lloyd the offending lolly was inadvertently transferred from his tongue to his hand to the ball as he tried to shine it with saliva at mid-off.

How Clive Lloyd lost WICB's No 2 post - JAMAICAOBSERVER.COM
Question for Jamaicans, as raised by some WICB sources, is whether the Jamaica Cricket Association had mandated their representatives for the St Maarten meeting to vote against Lloyd as vice-president, even in the face of the controversies over the secret contract the Board had signed with Digicel, the Irish telecommunications corporation.
Earlier, Lloyd had given firm assurance of his readiness to relocate from England, where he currently resides, to once again live within the Caribbean Community if successful in his bid for either president or vice-president of the WICB.
The pity, according to WICB sources, was that the defeat of Lloyd, whose "talents and wide experience are needed now more than ever", should have happened after it had already been agreed in principle, at a previous Board meeting, to change the rules to debar both the president and vice-president from voting at elections.
