Cliveden (pronounced CLIVV-d'n) is a mansion in Buckinghamshire, England overlooking the River Thames.
It was about this time that the Astors had the house extended in the form of a 'horseshoe' shaped wing, to provide extra bedrooms for their large house-parties.
The house became the centre of a scandal once more in 1961 when a chance meeting at a party there between the cabinet minister John Profumo and a showgirl Christine Keeler led to a brief romantic affair between them in the swimming pool.

Cliveden has a complicated history, but it was the 2nd Duke of Buckingham who bought the site some 20 miles from the city in 1666 and created its huge plateau overlooking the River Thames.
Cliveden was purchased in 1893 by William Waldorf Astor, scion of the prominent American family of financiers who had made their money in fur trading.
In the 1930s Cliveden came to be known as a gathering place for the "Cliveden Set" of influential political and entertainment figures, including Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw, Amy Johnson and Charlie Chaplin.

Cliveden House is the third house to sit on the site it occupies, the first, which was host to the first performance of the patriotic anthem, “Rule Britannia”, burnt down in 1795 as to did the second in 1849.
Cliveden’s most famous resident was Lady Nancy Astor, who, in 1919, was elected Britain’s first Member of Parliament.
Today Cliveden is a private luxury hotel, although much of it, such as the oak-panelled Grand Room, the French dining room and the former library, is open to day visitors.

The great stately pile of Cliveden, designed for the Duke of Sutherland by architect Charles Barry in 1850, had been a wedding present to Waldorf and Nancy from William Waldorf senior, Waldorf's fabulously rich and reclusive father, `Walled-off' Astor as he was nicknamed in the press.
She campaigned on social issues, particularly Prohibition which proved a great election liability, and she enjoyed it immensely, but one can't help feeling that it was an absorbing hobby for her.
