Amtrak reportedly lost $21 billion in its first 30 years of operation, but it has pinned its hopes for a brighter future on the promise of high speed trains.
The Amtrak Reform Council, an independent federal commission established in 1997, offers a chart that shows the ups and downs of Amtrak ridership over the past 20 years.

Amtrak plated over the window areas, removed the interiors and fitted the cars with a roll-up baggage door in the center of the car side.
Amtrak acquired a goodly number of these cars and still uses at least fourteen of them today for baggage, mail and express shipments all across the country.
Amtrak did acquire the three ACL coaches but they were retired and scrapped by the mid-1970's.

Schedulers at NJ Transit and Amtrak haven't decided whether Clocker express trains that were pulled from service during the spring will return.
Now it is up to Amtrak to determine when the trains are "in service", but for those 16 trainsets, bad brake rotors are not the excuse.
Thing is with gas going to $3 a gallon AMtrak should be able to fill every seat it can provide around the country so Amtrak would be having a change of plans righ about now.

Amtrak and NJ Transit said it's sensible for NJ Transit to assume responsibility for the Clockers because most of the people who ride those trains board them in New Jersey and use NJ Transit passes.
Clockers terminate their runs at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Station in New York, making stops, depending on the train, at North Philadelphia, Cornwells Heights, Trenton, Princeton Junction, New Brunswick, Metropark, Newark Liberty International Airport and Newark.
Warrington said Amtrak began cross-honoring NJ Transit monthly and weekly passes on the Clockers in the 1980s, when NJ Transit faced capacity problems and Clockers served as an alternative to crowded Northeast Corridor trains.

The average time on the clocker is over 90 minutes, where the regional is closer to 75 (#170 and #193 are often just 70 minutes when the sun and moon are lined up right).
Amtrak typically tries to release the new bi-annual timetable on the same weekend that we transition either to or from daylight savings time.
When the rest of the country is on daylight time and the Amtrak trains are still running at their normal times, trains in these areas will arrive one hour earlier than the times in the Fall/Winter timetable.

The club, which leases one Amtrak car each way between Princeton Junction and New York City, is the last private commuter club in the system, an Amtrak spokeswoman in Washington said.
Michael Bonner, manager of Amtrak's Clocker service between New York and Philadelphia, said it was difficult to determine whether the company makes or loses money on the lease.
She said she did not have data comparing the number of Clocker service riders before and after Sept. 11 but said Amtrak increased the number of cars briefly after the attack before reverting to earlier levels.

Amtrak began accepting NJ Transit monthly and weekly passes on Clockers in the 1980s to ease overcrowding on NJ Transit trains.
Equipment costs will not go up radically because NJ Transit already supplies Amtrak with engines for the Clockers, and some of the new bilevel rail cars that should be arriving in a few years were planned for Clocker runs.
Clockers provide needed capacity on the busy Northeast Corridor and a one-seat ride between Philadelphia and New York and New Jersey points in between.

Tonight, Amtrak is pulling the plug on the Clocker, established by the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1950s to provide hourly service between Philadelphia and New York.
Wouldn't it be nice to have an Amtrak California trainset running on the ACE route, just because it is caused Altamont Commuter Express, with the word Commuter in emphasis, doesn't mean that you can put plastic seats with little or no padding in them.
Amtrak California and ACE will now connect when the new midday train starts at the end of August, or as it is planned.

Even before Amtrak's Clocker train stops at a station, crew members often warn passengers not to use NJ Transit one-way or round-trip tickets.
The trenton times reported today that NJ Transit and Amtrak will be meeting soon to discuss whether the clocker is coming back when the schedule is released in October.
Assuming the Amtrak guy isn't totally wrong about his own train, it seems like Amtrak is content to let people just show up for their normally scheduled train and get an unpleasant surprise...

The annual amount to Amtrak could be as high as $70,000, for one car on the 7:59 morning Clocker from Princeton Junction and one car on the 5:42 out of Penn Station in the evening.
By contrast, Amtrak says that riders wanting to lease cars for special events could pay as much as $8,000 for one round trip between Philadelphia and New York, representing about what the railroad would get if the 80-seat car were full of full-fare paying passengers.
But Michael Bonner, the Amtrak official who oversees the Clocker service, said that — despite what overcrowded riders might think — the club was not taking away precious seats that should be available to everyone first come first served.

Customers boarding in Cornwells Heights are encouraged to travel on Amtrak’s Clocker train #624, which departs Cornwells Heights at 6:56 a.m., or Amtrak’s Keystone train #640, which departs Cornwells Heights at 8:10 a.m.
Due to equipment shortages last week, some Clocker service (trains #628 and #627) was temporary suspended, and NJ TRANSIT trains were used to accommodate Amtrak passengers between Trenton and New York.

 The Clocker takeover--dose it mean less trains?
Amtrak made their usual confusing statement--something about keeping the number of their northbound trains the same but increasing the southbound total by 2.
You've got a combination of Amtrak monthly ticket riders on this train and regular passengers being booked through the reservation system.
Amtrak needs another train to mirror Train 170 if you ask me - or help take the burden off of it at least in Philly.

I have no intention of “selling out” to Amtrak’s party line, and I expect to post criticisms on this site in the future, but to the extent that I do so, I wish it to be viewed as honest disagreement with good men who work under very difficult conditions and constraints.
Fire and Motion request to pelt Amtrak’s directors with calls for an end to the secrecy with which they manage their company amidst constant public support.
I call on Amtrak to conduct its business under the watch of the public eye, much as government-operated metropolitan transit agencies invite public participation in their collective thought and planning.

On a side note, under the Bush administration Amtrak breakup plan, each state would be responsible for funding the trains that run in it.
amtrak just about makes money on these suckers as is and they have relatively high operating costs and little efficiency.

Whatever benefits there are to commuting into the city by train are countered by the increasingly uncomfortable riding conditions (not to mention the "cattle calls" at NY Penn Station, often only minutes before the trains are scheduled to depart).
Perhaps Amtrak should be looking at trends and trying to be more proactive instead of whining that they have too much demand for their services.
Amtrak will use whatever tracks they want to use at Penn Station -- it's their station, so the burden of any capacity shortfalls is going to fall on NJT and LIRR.

I used to take the Amtrak from Syracuse to NYC because the cost of flying was ridiculously expensive.
If the whiners are not happy with the conditions on the Clockers, let them take one of the non-clocker Amtrak trains, and pay the higher fare to ride in a better class.
It's probably easier just to lease the car from Amtrak, but I'm guessing these guys are "big money" and could probably get a really sheik car for their journey instead.
