Review: Clockers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Uneducated-but-streetwise, Strike is a low-level drug-dealer (a "clocker") and possibly a murderer.
Clockers is about people trapped by circumstances, and with all the ambivalent personalities, there are no "good guys" or "bad guys" in the traditional sense.
Fresh, Clockers uses unexpected narrative turns to accentuate the themes of lost innocence and uncultivated potential, and affirms that tragic melodrama is not a prerequisite for emotional impact.

Danny Linton's Review: "Clockers"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Before the reels started rolling on "Clockers," Spike Lee's new film about a New York teenager caught between a drug pusher, a tough cop and a possibly duplicitous murder, there were some audience members complaining about the amount of language and violence they knew the film would contain.
And, true, the first 25 or so shots of the film were graphic close-ups of dead bodies, many with bullet holes the size of dimes in their heads.
As proficient as the first hour is, it's in the back act of the picture that "Clockers" really takes off -- Lee's direction, particularly in an interrogation scene with Keitel, is nothing short of brilliant, as he places Keitel actually in the flashback action he's interrogating a suspect about.

 "Clockers" timely, alarming - September 15, 1995
One of his most annoying habits has been his inability to recognize that there are moments when less is more and that flashy-trashy film school cleverness can actually detract from a story rather than enhance it.
Despite the fact that this film ends on a not-quite- convincing note of hope (there are really THREE endings) and showcases some moments of dark-hearted comedy, "Clockers" is as grim as it is good.
"Clockers" -- no surprise -- is rated R. The title sequence is a re-creation of police death scene photos of murdered young fls.

Clockers, though not as sturdy a film as Lee thinks it is, represents a turning point in the range of genres this prominent fl filmmaker has covered.
Strike (Mekhi Phifer) is a "clocker," a drug pusher who works "around the clock," for a neighborhood drug lord named Rodney (Delroy Lindo), a slippery individual who keeps one step ahead of the cops on his trail.
Clockers is indeed a film which showcases all the troubles normally associated with the nation's involvement in the drug war, with good cops, corrupt cops, and the dealers themselves as key players in the development of the story, but surprisingly, not a one of these characters comes off as a tired cliche.

One of Lee's primary concerns was to differentiate Clockers from "hood" films such as John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood (1991) and the Hughes Brothers' Menace II Society (1993).
While Clockers is wholly conscious of and reliant upon the hood films immediately preceding it, the film occupies a different position from those with which it is most closely aligned.
It is my assertion here that Clockers draws on elements of the hood chronotope--urban setting and contemporary time frame (aided by soundtrack, costuming, and extratextual references)--but revises them by setting up a dialogue between the hood's present and its past.

His last two films, Malcolm X and Crooklyn, suffered from their respectively classical and sentimental historicity while other African-American filmmakers have ris en to prominence by portraying the decay of the contemporary inner city.

Very long story short, "Clockers" is the film that I was waiting for Spike Lee to make, because I knew he had it in him.
There are some stylish and edgy camera angles, the acting is generally convincent and the characters complex enough (even if a bit stereotyped), but the movie is ultimately too long, the pacing slow, the plot unsurprising, the score melodramatic and the ending a bit weak and forced.

By and large, Lee has forgone the traditional concepts of moviemaking (to tell a cohesive, interesting, entertaining story) in favor of playing a lot of bad music, giving us some incomprehensible and overlapping dialogue, photographing some meaningless low-light images, and other sundry nonsense.
A plot does exist: Strike (Mekhi Phifer) is a clocker (a drug dealer), and his boss (Delroy Lindo, a shameless Samuel L. Jackson wannabe) sends Strike to kill the local fast food franchise's night manager.
While Clockers has its moments, they are few and far between.
