A clockwork radio is a radio that is powered by clockwork wind-up mechanism, rather than batteries or solar cells or mains electricity or thermoelectrics.
The modern clockwork radio is a patented design by Trevor Baylis through a company called Baygen.
Baylis claims to have devised his clockwork radio in response to hearing a news broadcast about the spread of AIDS in Africa.

Clockwork - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mechanical engineering, a clockwork is either a lightweight mechanical linkage, especially one involving multiple axles, or a complete mechanical device whose functioning relies on internal clockwork (in the preceding sense), especially where muscular effort is the sole source of operating power.
Often power for the device is stored within it via a winding device that applies mechanical stress to an energy-storage mechanism such as a spring, thus involving some form of escapement; in other cases, hand power may be utilized as it is applied.
Low-powered electrical equipment, such as a clockwork radio, where an energy-storing spring accounting for much of the size and weight of the device spins a much smaller electric generator; such equipment is very popular in certain Third World situations where batteries and mains power (house current) may be scarce.

One problem with the Baygen clockwork radio is that while the handle is being wound, no power is being generated for the radio.
Have two springs with one handle, and a way of automatically switching to the most run-down spring, which may well be easier said than done.
Have a second generator connected to the handle so that it generates power while you wind the spring up, during which time the generator connected to the spring is dead.

The sales brochure says the "Freeplay" clockwork radio is expected to be in demand in any market where the cost of batteries or electricity put appliances out of reach of the population, or where batteries and electricity are not available.
This is curious since Trevor Baylis, the designer of the clockwork generator, said the radio was primarily designed to provide an answer to the terrible communication problems in Africa and throughout the developing world, where the cost of power restricts radio use.
Import surcharges must be paid on components used in the manufacture of the Freeplay radios and all radios are classified in South Africa as a luxury items, incurring an extra duty on resale.

The After Radio workshop was held as part of Radio Day, entirely dedicated by the Prix Italia, in collaboration with RAI's Radio Division, to a tribute to the medium with which the Prix originated.
For Nicoletti "After Radio" was not so much a traditional workshop as a live simulation of a way of working which is the basis of radiophonic expression and the most advanced aspects of the Internet, in the conviction that these two means of communication have something in common.
But radio remains the simplest, most intimate and personal of the media, partly because it is portable in the case of transistor radios, as well as being the most international, allowing us, for example, to hear Italian programmes in America.

Baylis. The clockwork radio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
This extremely clever 'wind-up radio' was developed by the British inventor 'Trevor Baylis' for Third World countries where affordable energy is scarce or non-exsistent.
This radio uses no batteries and does not need any electricity to run it.
It is powered by an internal clockwork generator, which when fully wound up provides enough electricity for long periods.

The Lifeline Radio is a larger, sturdier and surprisingly lighter version of its predecessor wind-up radios and has been produced exclusively for the developing world.

The concept of a clockwork radio” first came into the public consciousness in the mid-nineties when the inventor Trevor Baylis was featured on the BBC programme ‘Tomorrows World’;.
Radio was an obvious way of educating and informing people, but the lack of availability of batteries meant that millions of people had no access to vital information.
The radio has a small solar panel on the top of the unit which is sufficient to fully power the radio in direct sunlight.

Baylis developed the radio so that it could be used in areas with no electricity.
The radio works on a similar principle to an alarm clock, except that - unlike the clock - when wound for about 20 seconds, electricity is generated and the radio stores and distributes the power constantly over a period of time.
About 20,000 of the radios, known as Freeplay, are being produced in South Africa every month and there is a demand for many times that amount.

The problem was that in most regions radio was the only media but the cost of batteries made the use of radios prohibitive for most Africans.
Since then the clockwork radio has developed even further to include a built in solar panel so the radio can operate off both sunlight and spring energy.
