Clogher Valley   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The Clogher Valley was vitally important in the dynamics of ice flow and retreat in the last glacial phase, the Midlandian, of south-west Northern Ireland.
The solid geology underlying the superficial deposits is Carboniferous, mainly the Clogher Valley and the Ballyshannon Limestone Formations dating from the early part of the period, with the later Meenymore Formation on the southern flank across the Clogher Valley Fault.
The deposits in the Clogher Valley show extreme complexity and a clear interpretation is further hindered by lack of exposure (imposing heavy reliance on surface morphology), possible extensive modification by meltwater channelling (degrading the original features) and a low gradient giving no clear indication of directions of water flow.

Carleton’s stories and novels, although written in Dublin, are mostly located in the Clogher Valley, a fertile area of County Tyrone, lying between the beautiful chain of hills to the north and the massive Slieve Beagh feature to the south.
As Carleton remarked, Clogher can claim city status as here is situated the Anglican cathedral of the Diocese of Clogher, a small but elegant building in the classical style.
Knockmany has frequent affectionate mention in Carleton’s work and the wooded path to the summit is a walk to be recommended to all visitors to the area.
