		The second Clone Saga was inspired by Marvel Comics' determination to produce a strong Spider-Man "event" story that would rival DC Comics' monumental storylines "The Death of Superman" and "Batman: Knightfall," both of which sold extremely well.
		Due to their unstable cell structures, the Mary Jane and Hydro-Man clones evaporate in front of Spider-Man. The death of the Mary Jane clone devastates him, and he is next taken to another dimension by Madame Web to fight in the animated version of the Secret Wars.

		It's a shame they brought her back from the dead, but after the Clone Saga (and all it's repercussions) had wheezed to a halt I guess they needed to bring back some of the old Spidey magic, and his relationship with Aunt May was always a big part of that.
		My problem with the Clone Saga wasn't so much the changes they made to the characters, more the fact that it was done in such a ham-fisted and confusing way, with ultimately no satisfying payoff.
		Hence the clone debacle in the first place--some writer or editor apparently felt that Spidey's NOT READING Dr. Connors's evaluation of his exam, but rather concluding on his own that he was the original, was a plotline requiring "resolution" for 18 years.

		Spider-Man was already in a bad place before the clone saga, with him brooding about his parents like Batman.

		He was an Interesting personality for the comic, and though the Clone Saga had to end or it woulda killed Spidey's popularoty all together, I dont think Ben had to die.
		The clone saga, Scarlet Spider, And Ben Riley issues are the most re-sold/re-ordered issues.

	Motime Like the Present
		I like this little piece by Gardner Linn (no permalink?), which argues that films can do superhero action better than comics, but cannot match the latter medium's capacity to convey the ironized melodrama which is at the core of (for instance) Spider-Man's appeal.
		I'm not a fan of this story (entitled "The Kiss") at all, but it's extremely pertinent to my discussion of the Conway Amazing Spider-Man run (which began here, and left off here).
		I interpret the entire clone saga as an inspired exploration of Peter Parker's guilt complex.
